Specification of Letters Patent.

To a whom, it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM B. Fen N, acitizen of the United States, residing at Sheepshead Bay, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Closure Devices for Glass Jars and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closure devices for glass jars, cans, bottles, and similar vessels used in preserving or holdingfruits and other articles and for other purposes; and the object thereof is to provideimproved closure devices of this class whereby jars, cans, bottles, and similar vessels may be quickly, easily, and colr veniently sealed whenever necessary and also easily opened whenever desired; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in means for closing a-vessel of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the ifollowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form apart, in which the sepa rate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in whicl Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the top part of a jar provided with my improved means for closing the same; Fig. 2, a similar view showing a modification; Figs. 3 and L, similar views showing other modifications; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, reference being made toFig. 1, Ihave shown at a the top portion of a jar having a short neck (L2, the top part of which is thickened, as shown at a, and provided in the top thereof with a top annular groove (0, whereby the top portion of the neck is provided with an inner neck portion a and an outer neck portion a of less height than the inner neck portion of. The outer wall or walls of the inner neck portion a is threaded, as shown at (J, and the inner wall or walls of the outer neck portion a are inclined inwardly and downwardly, as shown at a and in practice I provide a cap 6, composed of fibrous material saturated with a preservative material consisting of parafiin or other material or a composition which will preserve the cap against the action of liquids, acids, or other substances, and said cap is provided with a depending annular flange or rim 0', adapted to enter and fit within the groove (0*, and the inner walls of the flange or rim 6 of the cap are threaded to correspond with the thread on the inner neck portion at.
The flange or rim o of the cap 5 is of such thickness as to bind on the inner wall or walls of the outer neck portion a, and the outer wall of said flange or rim is also slightly inclined inwardly and downwardly to correspond with the inclinatiol'i of theinner wallof the outer neck portion a, and in sealing the jar the cap 7/ is screwed into position, as shown in Fig. 1, and forms a perfectly-tight closure device which cannot be removed except by turning it in the reversed direction in the manner of an ordinary screw-cap.
The cap 7) when made in the manner described possesses all the requisite strength, and said cap may be made of any desired firmness or rigidity; but it will be understood that the flange or rim 6 thereof is so made as to be slightly compressible, and may be also slightly elastic.
The construction shown in Fig. 2 is exactly the same as that shown in Fig. l, with the exception that the fibrous cap 1) is provided with a metal covering 0, which closely fits the same and incloses said cap completely, including the flange or-rim 5 thereof, and the operation with this form of cap or closure device will be the same as that shown in Fig. 1, the metal covering 0 of the fibrous cap 0 or the flange or rim 0 thereof being so formed as to be slightly elastic or flexible.

The inner wall of the outer part a, of the neck of the jar in this form of construction is provided with inwardly-dirooted teeth (Z, any desired number of which may be employed and the inner walls of which are outwardly curved in horizontal section, and the flange or rim 0 of the cap 1) is provided with small teeth (1, the outer walls of which are outwardly curved in horizontal section, and in securing the cap 6 in position, as shown in Fig. 3, in the operation of sealing the can the said cap is forced downwardly, so that the rim 1) thereof will enter the groove a, as shown in Fig. 5, and said cap is then turned to the left, and this operation forces the flange or rim 6 of said cap inwardly against the outer wall of the inner neck portion a of the vessel and securely looks or holds the cap in position.
The construction shown in Figs. 4c and 6 is exactly the same as that shown in Figs. 3 and 5, with the exception that the cap 5 is provided with a strengthening-cover e, consisting of thin metal, which entirely incloses said cap and is provided with a flange or rim 0, which incloses the rim or flange b of the cap, and the flange or rim 0 of the cover a of the cap 6 in this form of construction is slightly elastic or compressible and is provided with teeth 6 similar to and corresponding with the teeth (Z in the inner wall of the outer neck portion a and the teeth (Z on the outer wall of the flange or rim 6 of the cap Z). \Vith this construction the cover 6 is secured to the cap 6, or said cap is inserted into said cover, and in the operation of sealing the can the flange or rim 6 of the cap is inserted into the groove (0, as shown in Fig. 6, and said cap is turned to the left, as with the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and this operation forces the flange or rim 5 of the cap inwardly against the outer wall of the inner neck portion a My invention is in no way limited to the object for which the can, jar, bottle, or other vessel is intended, or to the material thereof, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A jar or other vessel, the top portion of which is provided with a deep annular groove forming inner and outer annular neck portions, the outer wall of the inner annular neck portion being threaded, and a closing cap composed of fibrous material saturated with a preservative material and provided with a depending flange or rim threaded on its inner side and adapted to enter said groove, said cap and the flange or rim thereof being provided with a thin metal cover, substantially as shown and described.
.2. A jar or other vessel provided with a threaded neck portion and a closing-cap composed of hard pressed fibrous material satu rated with a preservative material and provided with a depending flange or rim threaded to correspond with the threaded portion of the neck, substantially as shown and described.
3. A jar or other vessel provided with a neck in the top of which is a deep annular groove and a closing-cap composed of fibrous material and provided with a depending flange or rim adapted to enter said groove, and means for securing the rim of the cap in said groove, said cap being also saturated with apreservative material, substantially as shown and described.
4. Ajar or other vessel provided with a neck in the top of which is a deep annular groove and a closing-cap composed of fibrous material and provided with a depending flange or rim adapted to enter said groove, and means for securing the rim of the cap in said groove, said cap being also saturated with a preservative material and provided with an inclosing metal casing, substantially as shown and described.
