Description

PATENTED OUT. 24, 1905" W. B. PENN. CLOSURE DEVICE FOR JARS AND LIKE VESSELS.
APPLIOATION FILED 1750.23, 1904.
WITNES$E$ INVEITOR v 17??!1'4222 .5. )Zrzn m A a M I STATES WILLIAM B. FENN, OF SHEEPSHEAD BAY, NEW YORK.
CLOSURE DEVlCE FOR UAFIS AND LIKE VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1905.
Application filed December 23, 1904. Serial No. 238,050-
To (11], whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. FnNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheepshead Bay, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ulosu re Devices for Jars and Like Vessels, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to closure devices for glass jars, cans, bottles, and similar vessels used for preserving or holding fruits and other articles and for similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved closure device of this class whereby said jars, cans, bottles, and similar vessels may be quickly, easily, and conveniently sealed whenever necessary and also easily opened whenever desired; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in closure devices of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the top part of a jar provided with my improved closure device, and Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
1n the drawings forming part of this speciiication I have shown at a, an ordinary glass jar provided with a neck a, which in the form of construction shown is enlarged at the top, as shown at a The enlarged top portion (0 however, is not absolutely necessary, and the neck a may be of the usual or any preferred form.
In the top portion of the neck a or in the enlarged portion a" of said neck is an annular groove (4* of considerable depth and the walls of which are inclined inwardly slightly at the top portion thereof, and said walls are provided with inwardly-directed teeth a, any desired number of which may be employed, and said teeth in the form of construction shown are arranged vertically and are wedge-shaped and if-shaped in cross-section; but said teeth may be of any desired form. I also provide a cap 71, having a central depending screwthrcaded portion 71 which is of less diameter than the greatest diameter of the annular groove (/3, and in practice I insert into said annular groove (0* a packing-ring or gasket 0, composed of fibrous material and saturated with a preservative substance. compound, or solution, preferably composed of parafiin or a portion of paraffin and other preservative oils or liquids, which will render said ring or gasket 0 impervious to water, acid, or liquids of any kind or class, while at the same time making it slightly flexible and also slightly elastic.
The inner walls of the ring or gasket 0 in the manufacture thereof are threaded to correspond with the threads on the part b of the cap I), and said ring or gasket 0 is preferably of greater transverse thickness at the bottom than at the top thereof, and when the said ring or gasket has been forced into the groove (6 in the operation of sealing the jar the cap t is screwed into position, and this operation forces the ring or gasket 0 llitO close contact with the outer walls of the groove a) and makes a perfectly secure and tight closure of the jar, and the teeth (L5 prevent the turning of the ring or gasket in the groove a" in the operation of screwing the cap 5 into position.
My invention is in no way limited to the kind or class of jar, can, or other vessel which it is desired to close or seal; but the cap I) preferably composed of glass, but may be composed of any material which would not be affected by liquids and which would not injuriously affect fruits or other substances placed within the vessel to be sealed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A jar or other vessel provided with a neck having an inner annular groove in the top portion thereof the walls of which are contracted at the top, and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring or gasket composed of fibrous material and placed in said groove and the inner walls of which are threaded, and a cap having a depending screw-threaded portion adapted to be screwed into said ring or gasket, substantially as shown and described.
2. A jar or other vessel provided with a neck having an inner deep annular groove in the top portion thereof the walls of which are contracted at the top, and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring or gasket placed in said groove and the inner walls of which are threaded, and a cap having adepending screwthreaded portion adaptedto be screwed into said ring or gasket, substantially as shown and described.
3. A jar or other vessel provided with a neck having an inner deep annular groove in the top portion thereof the walls of which are contracted at the top, and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring or gasket placed in said groove and the inner walls of which are threaded, and a cap having a depending screwthreaded portion adapted to be screwed into said ring or gasket, said ring or gasket being also thicker at the bottom than at the top, and the depending screw-threaded portion of the cap being contracted from the top to the bottom thereof, substantially as shown and described. v
4:. A jar or other Vessel the top portion of the neck of which is provided with an inner deep annular groove, the walls of which are contracted at the top, and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring or gasket composed of fibrous material saturated with a preservative material, said ring or gasket being placed in said groove and the inner walls thereof being threaded, and a cap having a depending screw-threaded portion adapted to be screwed in the said ring or gasket, substantially as shown and described.
5. A jar or other vessel the top portion of the neck of which is provided with an inner deep annular groove, the walls of which are contracted at the top, and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring or gasket composed of fibrous material saturated with a preservative compound, said ring or gasket being placed in said groove and the inner walls thereof being threaded, and a cap having a depending screw-threaded portion adapted to be screwed in the said ring or gasket, said 'ring or gasket being thicker at the bottom than at the top and the depending portion of the cap being smaller at the bottom than at the top thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 21st day of December, 1904:.
