Description

Patented Oct. 11, '1932 UNITED ST TES PATENT oarice GEORGE FRANCYK, OF AKRON, OHIO I LID Application filed February 23, 1932. Serial No. 594,706.
This invention relates to lids or closures for ars or similar containers wherein threads are employed for detachably connecting the lid to the jar and has for the primary object, the provisionof means which will provide a separator and a gasket between the lid and the or to establish a leak-proof seal for the contents of the jar and which permits the lid to be readily screwed onto the jar without undue effort on the part of a person.
WVith this and other objects in view, this same.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the lid applied to the jar with the combined separator and gasket located between the lid and the jar.
Refe ring in detailto the drawing, the numer 1 indicates a jar or like container having a neck 2 with a spiral thread or rib 3 formed thereon. Between the neck 2 and 4 the body of the jar is an annular flange 4.
A combined separator and gasket 5 constructed of rubber or similar material is p0.- sitioned about the neck 2 and provided at its upper edge with an annular flange 6 resting on the upper edge of the neck.
A closure or lid 7 is provided with an annular'flange 8 adapted to fit over the combined separator and gasket and the inner wall thereof has formed therein a spiral rib corresponding to the rib or thread 8 of the neck 2 so that when the closureor lid-is turned onto the neck it will force the combined separator and gasket tightly in position upon the neck thereby sealing the contents of the jar'against entrance of airor the escape of the contents from the jar when 111 l quid form. The innerzface of the closure or lid is provided with an annular recess 9 to receive the annular flange of the combined separator and gasket. Thus it will be seen that when the lid or closure is threaded into the neck the flange will be forced tightly into engagement with the upper edge of the neck and with seating engagement in the annular groove 9. The edge of the annular portion 9 is rounded as shown at 10 forcing the combined separator and gasket to flare at its lower edge andagainst the flange 4 of the jar thereby hermetically sealing the contents. of the ar. J Projections 11 are formed upon the annular portion of the lid or closure 7 to provide finger grips whereby a person may readily obtain a firm grip on the lid or closure for the purpose of turning the same on or off the jar.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in con struction, combinatlon and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combinationwith a jar having a neck surrounded by a flange and provided with av scope of my invention, as
spiral thread, a closure for the neck and having a spiral rib, a yiel'dable separator and gasket mounted on the neck with seating engagement with the flange and having a rightangle portion engaging the edge of the neck to be forced tightly against the neck on the threading of the closure to the neck to hermetically seal the jar, said closure having an annular groove to receive the rightangle portion nd one end of the gasket and separator, said ctosure having its edge round: ed to bear against the separatorand gasket and cause the lower edge thereof to flare outwardly and tightly against the flange.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. GEORGE FRANCYK. f
