Be it known that 1, PAUL E. BABIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Cans, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention pertains to cans, and more particularly to cans adapted for use in the shipment of oil, where it is materially advantageous toprevent leakage or waste of the oil in the handling thereof.
lVith this object in view the invention consists in the advantageous can closure illustrated, that is simple and inexpensive to produce and well able to withstand the rough usage to which articles of corresponding utility are subjected.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation on the neck of my novel can.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the can closure or cover and the novel locking means I employ to securely fasten said cover to the neck of the can.
Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the relative positions of cover and neck whenthe same are in their proper assembled positions.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section of Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The neck 1 of the container is slightly decreased in circumference at its lower end or in other words bottle shaped and at 2 the said neck is preferably provided with a shoulder that is form d by pressing the material of the neck inwardly. At its upper end the neck 1 is further provided with a bead 11 that is formed by turning the material back upon itself. The mode of producing the bead'll forms no part of my invention.
As will appear by reference to the drawings a keeper or projection a is formed integral with or otherwise secured to the neck of the container at a point slightly below the head 11.
The cap or closure 10 of my device has a downwardly extending portion 5, whose circumference is slightly less than that of the Specification of Letters Patent.

neck 1 of the container and like said neck 1 the portion 5 is cone or bottle-shaped with its circumference diminishing at the lower end thereof. 1
At its upper end the portion 5 has a downwardly extending band or collar 6 that is formed integral with the portion 5 and is spaced therefrom by a slight intervening space. It will thus be appreciated that a pocket is formed at the upper end of the cap into which the neck of the container rests.
In order to prevent water and the like from gaining access to the contents of the container and in order to doubly assure the contents from becoming contaminated the band 6 is provided with a bead that is formed by turning the material of band (3 back upon itself.
As will be appreciated by reference to Fig. 4, the portion 5 is wire reinforced and turned thusinsuring closer connection between the neck and cover and thereby pre* venting escape of the contents of the container. I would also have it understood that in the preferred embodiment of the device the bead 6 is wire-reinforced similar to bead 5.
On its top the cover or closure has a handle 7 formed of a single piece of material and secured thereto in any suitable manner or formed integral with said cover. Extending downwardly from the handle is a locking device 8 having a bayonet slot 9 that engages and is rigidly held by the keeper of the neck 1.
I would have it understood at this point that the handle 7 may have a locking device 8 at each side thereof and when such provision is made, it will of course be necessary to employ a keeper 4' at each side of the neck of the can.
It will be readily appreciated from the foregoing that when the can is filled with oil or other liquid, the collar 5 of the closure or cover 10 is inserted into the neck 1 of said can and forced downwardly until itsdownward movement is stopped by the bead 11 at the upper end of the neck 1 coming into the bayonet Slot or slots on the said cover or cap. 7
When occasion demands the channel may be provided with a rubber ring or other suitable washer to assist in preventing leakage of the contents from the can.
The bead 2 may be employed as a line so as to enable a person to readily ascertain the amount o1 oil in the lVhen de med expedient an aperture may be formed in the handle of the cover and a chain passed throuah said aperture and attached to the body toprevent loss of the cover.

collar formed. at the upper end of the neck by bending the material of the neck backward upon itself, a cover adapted to close the neck of the container and comprising a downwardly extending portion of slightly decreased circumference that snugly rests within the neck of the container a turned portion formed on the lower end of the downwardly extending portion and adapted to snugly abut the inner side of the neck, a portion rigidly retained on the upper end of the downwai ing a downwardly extcndin overlapping portion that rests adjacent the upper outer surface of the neck and a handle secured on the portion to which the downwardly eX- tending portion is secur d; said handle having a relatively long extension on one of its sides, and a slot formed in the extension and adapted to receive the projection on the neck, whereby casual displacement of the cover from the neck is effectually precluded.
