Description
V tisero Anag a I INVENTOR O av WW% ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 18, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application October 2, 1933, Serial No. 691,875 In Mexico October 3, 1932 1 Clam.
This invention relates to a container neck and closure therefor and has for the primary object the provision of an improved closure seat for the neck provided with angularly related walls which when engaged by the closure under pressure will cause flexation of the closure and force the latter to bear tightly against the faces of the seat to efiectively sea] the container to prevent evaporation or escape of the contents of said container.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating a container neck and a closure therefor forced into engagement with a seat of the neck by a die.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating the neck, seat, gasket and closure.
Figure 3 is a perspective view illustrating a modified form of closure.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating a closure seat in the neck of the container.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates the neck of a container which has formed therein a closure seat 2 by constructing the neck with different interior diameters. The seat 2 is provided with arcuately curved walls 3 and 4 which merge into each other to form an annular groove 5. The arcuately curved wall 4 is disposed inwardly of the arcuately curved wall 3, as clearly shown in Figure 4. The seat 2 receives a closure in the form of a cap 6 including a hollow dome shaped portion 1 and a marginal flange 8. The flange 8 is of annular formation and extends outwardly and upwardly from the dome-shaped portion After the positioning of the closure to the neck force is applied to the closure by a die 9 which engages the dome-shaped portion, as shown in Figure 1, causing a part thereof to conform to the wall 4 of the seat and the flange 8 to conform to the wall 3 of the seat with the connecting portion between the flange and the dome portion extending into the groove 5. The closure is constructed of any suitable flexible material so that when applied to the seat one portion thereof will have a leverage against the Wall 4 of the seat and another portion having a leverage against the wall 3 of the seat. A asket a is secured to the inner face of the closure prior to the application of the latter to the 10 neck and is of such a material that it will readily conform to the contour of the closure prior to and after its application to the seat. The closure applied to the seat as above set forth will effectively sea] the container to prevent escape or evaporation of the contents of the container.
As shown in Figure 3 the flange of the closure may be slotted at relatively spaced intervals, as shown at II, providing a series of partially detached portions to the flange which portions are 2 adapted to contact with the arcuately curved wall 3 of the seat.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
A neck for a container comprising a tubular portion, a seat formed in said portion and having arcuately curved walls merging into each other to form an annular groove, a closure to engage the seat and including a hollow dome-shaped portion and an upwardly and outwardly extending annular flange, said dome portion adapted to flex under pressure and bear against one of said walls with the flange bearing against the other wall and extending into the groove, and a gasket secured to the inner face of the closure and adapted to conform to the contour thereof and to engage one of the curved walls and extend into the groove by the influence of said closure being applied to the seat, said flange having relatively spaced slots to provide partially disconnected portions to the flange.
