G. F. ANDERSON CLOSURE FOR RECEPTACLES Filed May 7 1921 avwawfoz GfFflnaeraon,
Patented May 27, 1924.
UNITED STATES GUSTAY I. ANDERSON, OI BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLOSURE FOR RECEPTACLES.
Application filed May 7,
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV F. ANDERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Closures for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for receptacles, and it is the object of the invention to provide a closure so constructed and arranged whereby as the closure is applied to the opening of a receptacle the air between the contents of the receptacle and the closure will be expelled during the applying of the closure to the receptacle openin Tt is another object of the invention to rovide a .closure of this character comprismg a disk to engage the rim of the receptacle opening and having a skirt to ass downwardly over the wall of the opening, said skirt having longitudinal corrugations circumferentially disposed around the same to maintain communication between the exterior and interior of the receptacle as the closure is applied thereto, and means being provided to enter the opening to displace and expel the air between thematerial in the receptacle and the closure as the latter is applied to the receptacle.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a receptacle closure of this character in which the skirt is arranged with a screw thread to co-operate with the thread about the opening of the receptacle, said skirt having longitudinal corrugations-intersecting the skirt thread whereby the closure may be applied to the receptacle by a rotary movement thereof.
Other ob ects and inventions will hereinafter appear.
In the drawing and accompanying and forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a closure showing an embodiment .of my invention applied to the opening of a receptacle, such as the neck of a bottle.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation of the component parts of the closure showing the same in separated condition and in relation to the threaded neck of a bottle.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the 010+ sure shown in Figure 1 looking at the top and side.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a seal- Serial No. 487,739.
ing member to be interposed between the closure proper and the rim of a receptacle opening.
Fi re 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectiona view in perspective of the closure means and receptacle to show the applicatlon of the closure thereto and the sealing of the closure; and
Figure 6 is a sectional side elevation of a modification of the closure showing the parts in disassembled relation.
Similar characters of reference designate like parts throughout the different views of the drawing.
The embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing comprises a disk member having a depressed ortion 7 to engage within the o ening of a receptacle, such as the mouth 0 a neck of a receptacle 8.. The disk member has a skirt or body portion 9 to be passed downwardly over the neck of a receptacle as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and is formed with a head 10 at the outer edge by rolling the material of the skirt outwardly. The skirt is provided with a rolled thread 11 to co-operate with the usual thread 12 formed on the outer surface of the receptacle to apply the closure to the receptacle by a rotary movement..
As stated it is an object of the invention to displace the air in the receptacle above the oontents'of the receptacle and the closure in applying the closure by the entering of the depressed portion 7 of the closure in its passage into the receptacle, and to permit of the escape of said air a series of passages are provided communicating with the interior and exterior of the receptacle. These passages are arranged by corrugating the skirt of the closure, these corrugations extending longitudinally of the skirtand being circumferentially dis osed around the skirt, as shown at 13, wit the corrugations intersecting the thread 11 and exten ing from the end, or adjacent the beaded portion 10, of the skirt to beyond the juncture of the skirt with the disk portion of the closure, as clearly shown at 14, in Figures 1, 2 and 5. The depressed ortion of the disk andthe corrugations of t e skirt are so arranged that there is an annular flat portion interposed between the juncture of the corrugated skirt and the disk portion formin a seat to engage the rim of the wall 0 the receptacle opening, as clearly shown at 15..
. ceptacle permitting of the ready flow of the lid air from the receptacle displaced by the depressed portion of the closure entering the opening, and as the closure is drawn home to the rim of the receptacle openin the ular seat 15 will firmly engage suc rim or the wall of the opening shutting ofl communication with the interior of the receptacle through the passages formed by the corrugations 13.
To prevent the contents of the receptacle from coming in contact with the inner surface of the closure with the possible corrosion of the material of the closure due to chemical action or. otherwise and the consequent spoiling of the material in the receptacle, and to also serve as a means to seal the connection between the annular seat 15 and the rim of the receptacle openin a disk of sealing material 16 is provide which may comprise a disk of parafined paper. This sealing disk is preferably arranged with radial flutes or corrugations as clearl shown in Figures 2 and t whereb it is adapted to readily adjust itself to t e c0n= tour of the inner face of the depressed portion of the disk and obviating the possibility of rupturing said sealing disk by undue strain thereon as the closure is applied to the receptacle. Furthermore, these flutes will facilitate the expelling of the air between the depressed portion of the closure and material in a receptacle as the closure is applied to the latter.
In the modification shown in Figure 6 the structure of the closure is substantially the same as that illustrated and described in connection with Figures 1 and 2, but instead of depressing the disk to provide the means to displace the air between the closure and surface of the material in a receptacle and making thesame integral with the disk, such means consists of a separate member 17 which is constructed and arranged to be inserted into the closure. In this form of the closure means the member 17 constitutes (ill!) the closure proper the same being arranged with an annular flange 18 to engage the rim of the receptacle 0 drawn thereto by the isk member the latter serving as a securing means for the mber 17. The operation of applying the ening and 1s firmly a eee rae closure shown in Figure 6 is substantially the same as that described in connection with Figures 1 to 5. The sealin disk 16 is also used in the arrangement 0 the cl0= sure shown in Figure 6 to serve as a sealing means and a protecting shield for the inner surface of the member 17.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of my invention and portions thereof may be used without others.
