WI TJVESSES a@ UNITEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS F. SULLIVAN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
JAR-TO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,636, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed December 15,1896. Serial No. 615,723. (No lmodel.)
To (LIZ whom, it H2M/y concern:
Be it known that I, TnoiIAs F. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Tops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fruit-jars, the object being to provide a jar which may be sealed air-tight and yet may be readily and conveniently opened whenever desired by simply turning the top or cover thereof and without injuring the jar.
My invention consists in a jar-body provided adjacent its mouth with a recess adapted to contain a sealing medium and a cover or top closing said jar and recess, whereby any air which may leak through the cover will be prevented from getting access to the jar by said sealing medium.
My invention also consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section of a jar constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the jar with cover removed. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the top Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the body of the jar, which may be of anypreferred form or material suitable for the purpose of containing preserves. I have made the upper end of the jar thicker than the body and provided it with an annular chamber or recess l), on the exterior wall of which are spaced retaining-lugs c for a purpose to be presently described. The upper ends of the side walls of the recess are smooth-surfaced and in the same horizontal plane.
The jar or cover l) has a dished center c, an annular rim f, and a vertical pendent flange g, provided on its inner surface with spaced engaging ledges h, equal in number to the lugs c on the bottle. These ledges are adapted to engage with said lugs to hold the top or cover on the jar. The jar-top is further provided with a pendent annular iange 7i', adapted to be held within the annular recess l) and extending into the lower part thereof.
The coverrim contains on its inner surfaces two rubber sealing-rings e' c, which when the cover is applied seat upon the upper edges of the walls of the recess b and assist in preventing entrance of air to the bottle. In sealing the jar the said annular recess is filled with liquid of the contents and then the cover is applied. Should air happen to leak past the first rubber ring i, it would be prevented from getting into the jar by the Ilange 7e in the liquid i in the recess.
My invention, it will be seen, therefore, provides a simple, inexpensive, and effective fruit-jar which is proof against the entrance of air.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A fruit-jar comprising a top provided with a comparatively wide and deep annular recess adjacent its mouth, adapted to contain a sealing medium and positioned inside the vertical plane of the jar-walls, the walls of said recess being in the same horizontal plane, and the exterior wall thereof provided with retaining devices, and a top or cover therefor having a dished center and a broad fiat raised annular rim, a thin annular sealingflange 7i seated in and pendent from the center of the rim and adapted to extend down within the recess at the center and to near the bottom thereof, and two sealing-rings on the under side of the rim to seat upon the upper edges of the recess-walls, one of the said rings being confined between the dished center and sealing-fiange and the other between said sealing-flange and the vertical flanged wall g of the cover, said flanged wall being provided with means for engaging said retaining devices, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS F. SULLIVAN.
