lM PROVED BOTTLE-STOPP ER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 39,208., dated July 14, 1863; antedated January 16. 1863.
To (10% whom it may concern Be it known that I, 011s. F. BAXTER, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and Improved Forms of Stoppers for Bottles, Jugs, or other Uses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings as part of this specification.
The stoppers are made of elastic substance and hollow or having a cavity opening in the end entering the bottle. .The object of the cavity is to save material, permit any interior force to press the sides of the stopper more firmly to the neck of the bottle, and the easy removal by pressing the stopper upon one side, and thus forcing out the opposite shoulder.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a stopper, a, with the hollow or cavity opening from the end within, 1), which is adapted to bottles in common use. Fig. 2 shows the same design of stopper, having in addition a shoulder or enlargement, 0, adapted to a corresponding groove in the mouth or neckof the bottle, d.
The shoulder or enlargement and groove are to prevent the expulsion of the stopper by interior force, and also save the usual nccessity of tying.
I do not claim a hollow elastic stopper, or a stopper with a shoulder or enlargement havinga hollow or cavity opening externally when placed in the bottle, or a bottle with a groove ens. F. BAXIER.
