NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 708,171, dated September 2, 1902.

To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE B. REUBELT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Williamson and State of Tennessee,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinvention relates to new and useful improvements in non-refillable bottles, and particularly in the provision of a bottle which has a cap adapted to be locked over the neck of the bottle and which cap must necessarily be broken before access may be had to the contents of the bottle, thereby insuring the bottle against a second filling in connection with the same cap, which is adapted to be of glass and to bear labels or trade-marks identifying a particular brand of liquid.
The invention will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims, and is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the several views, in which- Figure l is a view showing a cap locked to a bottle embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the upper end of a bottle with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cap, showing the flange on the inner wall thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the spring which is mounted in the grooved or recessed circumference of the wall of'the bottle.
Referencenow being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bottle,having anannular shoulder A,upon which the cap B rests when placed over the neck of the bottle. Said bottle is provided with a neck D, in which a stopper D,-of ordinary construction, may be placed. E designates a panel or recess vertically disposed in the outer wall of the bottle above said annular flange,
and projecting laterally over the lower portion of said recess is an elongated recessed portion F, and intermediate said elongated recess F and the bottom wall of the recess E is a shoulder =H, provided for the purpose which will hereinafter appear. bent upon itself at K, is held in a wedgeshaped recess N, leading laterally from the recess E at its lower portion. Said spring is fastened at K in the V-shaped recess N, and the free ends of the spring are bent at'right angles, as at M and M. One of said endsM is adapted to bear against a shoulder H and is held stationary, while the other end M is adapted to yield when depressed by the flange B,which is fastened to or integral with the inner wall of the cap near its open end when said cap is forced down over the neck of the bottle. Said flange B is of such a shape as to enter the laterally-projecting recess F when depressed through the recess E and in line with said recess F. As the cap is forced down, said flange passing through the recess E and pressure applied to the cap, the arm of the spring will yield, and by giving the cap a partiallyrotating movement the flange B will enter the recess F. After said flange is wholly within the recess F said spring-arm will resume its normal position and bear against the upper wall of the recess F at the end of the flange and serve as an obstruction against the cap being turned so as to free the flange from the ,recess F. In this position the cap will be locked securely to the bottle, as will be readily understood.
It is my purpose to place upon the glass cap a label or other advertising material whereby the particular liquid may be identified, said label or other material being placed upon the inner or' outer wall of the cap, as may be desired, and by this provision it will be noted that the cap will necessarily have to be broken, and hence the label or seal destroyed, before access may be had-to the contents of the bottle through the neck thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A non-refillable bottle, comprising in combination with the body portion of the bottle, having an annular shoulder on its outer wall, a recess in the outer wall, said recess havingalaterally-projecting portion, a spring A spring K, v
having its ends bent at right angles and seated within said recess, a cap having a flange upon its inner wall, said flange adapted to enter the recess in the outer wall of the bottle, and to be turned with the cap so as to enter said laterally-projecting portion of the recess, and to be held therein, by the end of said spring, the cap adapted to rest upon said annular shoulder, as set forth.
2. A non-refillable bottle, comprising in combination with the bottle, having an annular flange in its outer wall, below the neck portion of the bottle, a recess E and a V- shaped recess N at the bottom of the latter, a laterally'projecting recessed portion F extending horizontally at a location near the bottom of the recess E, a shoulder H inter- HORACE B. REUBELT.
