Bung-Seal, which invention is fully set forth I had to the accompanying drawing, in which ception of said seal, the bung being secured terial, which may be cast or molded with the UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ABIEL WOOD, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HUNG-SEALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,187, dated January 9, 1877; application filed December 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABIEL WOOD, of Brook lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved in the following specification,-reference being Figure 1 represents a vertical central section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination of a seal made of fragile material with a recess formed in the face of a bung for the re in position by nails or other equivalent fastenings, so that by the seal these fastenings are protected, and the bung cannot be removed without destroying the seal. It consists, also, in-the combination, with a bung, of a seal composed of a disk of vitreous material and a supportingpiece of leather or other equivalent material, so that by means of said supporting-piece the disk of vitreous material can be readily and securely fastened to the bung.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a hung which is made of wood and driven into the bung-hole in the ordinary manner. In the face of this bung is a circular recess, a, and the bung is ,secured in position by nails b, or other equivalent fastenings, as shown in Fig. -l of the drawing. Into this recess is placed a seal, 13, either of sealing-wax or of glass, or of any other fragile material, which is secured in position either by its own adhesive property, as in the case of sealing-wax, or by means of any suitable cement, so as to protect the nails 11. The seal is marked with the brand of the contents of the barrel, and in order to remove the bung the seal must be broken, so that by my seal the contents of the barrel are effectually protected against being deteriorated by'the addition of other liquids of inferior quality.
The seal which I use, by preference, consists of a disk, b b, of glass or other vitreous maciently durable for my purpose.
The principal object of the supporting-piece is to enable me to secure the seal in the recess of the bung by means of glue or other suitable cement which will penetrate the ma terial composing the supporting-piece, and form a durable connection between the seal and the bung. Said supporting-piece also forms a cushion'for the glass disk, so as to prevent the same from being broken accidentally.
It will be seen that my seal can be made at a small expense, and by its application the contents of the barrel are effectually protected.
What I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a seal made of fragile material with a hung having a recess in its face, said bung being secured in position by means of nails or equivalent fastcnings, which are covered by the seal, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The combination, with a bung, of a seal composed of a disk of vitreous material and a supporting-piece of leather or other equivalent material, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of December, 1876.
