UNITED STATES PATENT oruicn.
JOHN SANFASON, OF MEDFORD, NORTH DAKOTA.
SAFETY -POGKET.
Application filed August 3, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SANFASON, citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is an improved safety pocket which embodies novel fastening means susceptible of application to any pocket of the ordinary type, and which is arranged to effectually retain a pocketbook or other object of value therein and prevent the surreptitious abstraction of the same, although rendering possible the withdrawal of the article by the owner without any unusual inconvenience.
With this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe, and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a safety pocket constructed in accordance with my invention, showing an article locked therein; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; and, Fig. 3 is a detail view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a pocket that may be of any suitable material and is of any desired construction or design, except that it is provided at its opposite sides near its mouth with reinforcing members 2 which carry at corresponding points the head and socket members 3 and 3 of a separable fastening. To one of these fastening members, say the member 3, a retaining strap 4L is detachably secured at one end and is provided near its other or free end at longitudinally spaced points with the members 5 of a suitable separable fastening that, in the present instance, is of the head and socket type. 6 represents a pocketbook or other article of value to Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 446,656.
which an article strap 7 is permanently secured at one end and has its other end provided with a fastening member 8 arranged for a separable engagement with the fastening member 3.
In the practical use of my improved safety pocket construction, the article of value is introduced into the pocket, and the fastening member 8 engaged with the fastening member 3 the retaining strap 4: being then passed around the upper end of the article with the portion between the fastening members 5 extending around the article strap, and said fastening members 5 being then engaged to hold the straps in interlocked position and retain the desired article securely in position in the pocket. To efiect the detachment of the article, the above operation is reversed, and as such operation necessarily requires considerable manipulation, it would be impossible for a pick-pocket to abstract the article, even though he were familiar with the pocket construction, without causing the owner to become aware of the at tempted pilfering.
It is to be particularly noted that by the detachable connection of the straps with the reinforcing members, the fastening straps may be removed from the pocket when not desired for use, so as to leave practically no obstructions within the pocket to prevent its use in the ordinary manner. It is to be further observed that in case the article which it is desired to retain in the pocket against accidental removal, is not provided with an article strap, the locking means of my improved pocket may be still employed by discarding the fastening straps and engaging the members 3 and 3 of the separable fastening or connection to hold the mouth of the pocket securely in closed position.
From the above description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided an improved safety pocket construction which is most efficient in operation, which consists of com paratively few parts that are simple and durable in construction, and which may be easily and cheaply manufactured so as to be placed upon the market at a price not too great to prevent its general adoption.
Vhen the article of value is not provided with an article strap, it will be evident that any suitable longitudinal bond such as a stout elastic band, may be advantageously substituted therefor and the retaining strap 4: engaged with said bond to secure the article against accidental displacement from the pocket.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:
1. In a safety pocket construction, the combination with a pocket of a retaining strap secured at one end thereto and carrying at its other or free end, at spaced points, the members of a separable fastening, and an article strap adapted to be permanently secured at one end to an article of value and having its other end arranged for a detachable engagement with the pocket, the retaining strap being passed around the article strap With its separable fastening members in engagement, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination With a pocket provided at its opposite sides near its mouth With reinforcing members carrying at corresponding points the respective members of a separable connection or fastening, of a re taining strap arranged at one end for a detachable engagement with one of the fastening members and carrying at spaced points at its other or free end the members of a sep arable fastening, and an article strap adapted to be permanently secured at one end to an article of value and carrying at its other or free end a fastening member arranged for engagement With the fastening member of the other reinforcing member, the retaining strap being passed around the article strap with the members of its separable fastening in engagement, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN SANFASON.
