Specification of Letters Patent.
latented July 2?, i915.
Applicationfiled March 12, 1915. Serial No. 13,993.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. VVA'rKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Arctic- Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1 a plan view of anarctic buckle constructed in accordance with my invention and shown as applied to the flaps of an arctic. Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view of the same in the closed or locked position. Fig. 3 a similar view showing the hook turned in position to be disengaged from the ladder. Fig. 4i a plan view of the ladder, detached. .l ig. 5 a plan view of the hook, detached.
T his invention relates to an improvement in arctic buckles which usually consist of a ladder and a clasp, the clasp usually being formed in two or more parts.
The object of thisinvention is to form the clasp or hook member in a single piece so that it can be more conveniently engaged and disengaged from the ladder, as well as reduce the cost of manufacture; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ the usual ladder 2 except it will be noted that the outer ends 3 are rounded to prevent the end of the ladder from chafing an arctic to which it is applied. The rear end of the ladder is provided. with the usual loop at by which it is attached by a flexible strap 5 to The ladder is also formed with the usual openings 7 forming a series of intermediate bars 8. The hook member is formed from a single piece of metal and comprises a bar 9 by which the hook member may be attached by a flexible strap 10 to the other side 11 of the arctic and in line with the ladder 2. The rear portion 12 of the liookforins a finger-piece by which the hook may be turned, The outer end 13' of the hook is turned downward and rearward, and part of the metal forward of the bar 9 being removed forms a bill 1 whica points rearward and is adapted to engage with. the bars 8 of the ladder. it is to be noted that the lengtn of this bill corresponds only necessary to slightly raise the fingerpiece whichis permitted by the flexible strap 10 so as to more the bill away from the bar with which it engages and allow it to pass through the opening. The ladder is then free to be moved back or forth between the bill 1 1 and the bar 9. It will thus be seen that I provide an arctic buckle with a onepiece hook whichis more convenient in fastening, and unfastening the arctic than is atwo-part clasp. V
I claim 1. an arctic buckle comprising a ladder having a series of alternating bars and open ings, a onepart hook comprising a bar, a finger-piece a downwardly and rearwardly extending hook, and a rearwardly extending bill adapted to pass through the openings in the ladder and engage with the bars thereof.
2. An arctic buckle comprising a ladder provided with alternating openings and bars, and a hook provided with a bar, a rearwardly extending finger-piece, a down wardly and rearwardly extending hook, and a rearwardly extending bill corresponding in length to the width ofthe slotsin the ladder and adapted to engage with the ba rs thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
