EDIVARD R. ROBBINS AND LU L. WALRATH, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA STRAP OR ROPE ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,497, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed February 23, 1893. Serial No. 463,446. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EDWARD R. ROBBINS and LU L. IVALRATH, citizens of the United States, residing at Sacramento, Sacramento county, State of Galifornia, have invented an Improvement in Harness, Strap, or Rope Attachments; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
Our invention relates to an attachment for harness, hitching straps, or ropes, by which the strap may be taken up to any required length and locked at that point.
It consists of a supplemental strap having loops or keepersin conjunction with the main strap or rope and connected therewith as will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aview of our device showing the bight of the supplemental strap open to allow the free movement of the main strap or rope. Fig. 2 shows the parts closed and locked. Fig. 3 shows a modification of the device. Fig. 4: shows the manner of cutting the supplemental strap and loops or keepers.
The object of our invention is to provide an attachment for certain parts of harness for hitching straps or ropes which it is desired to adjust to a particular length, and afterward secure them at the point of adjustment.
A is the main strap or rope, and B is the supplemental adjusting and locking strap which is formed with loops or keepers G and D. These may be stitched, riveted, or otherwise fastened together, but we prefer to cut them out in one piece with the short strap B, and they are afterward folded and stitched to form a noose as shown. The strap A passes through these two loops or keepers O and D as shown. In the present case we haveshown it adapted to be used as ahitching strap, and it may have any desired fastening upon the end to attach to the horses bit, or around the neck or in any other suitable or desired way.
E is a stout iron link which passes through the bight or loop formed by the strap B which extends outward from the keeper 0, then curves upon itself, and passes through the keeper inside of the strap A, and the latter strap A passes through the keeper D which is upon the opposite side of the keeper C from the bight or loop B. The end of the strap A has a safety hook or other fastening F.
In Fig. 1, we have shown a snap hook which is attached to the ring E.
The operation will then be as follows: If used as a hitching strap, the strap A is passed around a post, tree, or other point, and the hook F engaged with the ring E. The strap A is then pulled through the loops or keepers C and D until it clasps the post tightly. Then the loop or keeper D is pulled down with one hand, while the loop or keeper Cis pushed up with the other, until the bight or loop of the strap B is drawn down so as to lock tightly upon the ring E, as shown in Fig. 2, and this prevents the strap from slipping or becoming loosened in any way.
In order to make the look more secure, we have shown the strap B made tapering or wedge-shaped, being thickest at the point where it leaves the loop or keeper 0, and thinnest at the point where it joins the loop or keeper D. By this construction, when it is drawn through the loop or keeper 0 it constantly increases the thickness of leather within the loop or keeper, and thus binds more firmly upon the strap A. When it is desired to loosen the strap, it is only necessary to pull the loop or keeper 0 backward along the strap A, and it will move through the ring E, thus allowing the loop or keeper D to slip upward on the strap until it comes in contact with the loop or keeper C. The strap A will then slip loosely through the two loops or keepers, and may be slackened sufifiiciently to disengage it.
It will be manifest that if a rope is used instead of the strap A, by having an enlargement or knot upon the end, as shown at F in Fig. 8, this knot maybe put through the bight or loop B, and when the bight or loop 13 of the supplemental strap is drawn down so as to clasp the rope where it passes through the bight or loop, the knot will prevent the end of the rope from being pulled out, and it will be locked in the same manner as described for Fig. l,without using the ring E. The same arrangement of straps is equally suitable for lengthening and shortening certain portions of the harness straps, as, for instance, the back straps when harness is to be changed to IOC horses of different sizes. These lnay be easily lengthened or shortened in the same man me): as here described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let:- ters Patent, is
1. Adeviceforadj usting and securing straps and ropes, comprising loops or keepers, and the intermediate portion returned upon itself and passed through one of said loops or keepers to form a bight or loop adapted to receive one end of the part to be secured.
2. Adevice for adjusting and securing straps and ropes, comprising a strap having a loop or keeper at each end adapted to be slidably mounted upon the part to be secured, said strap being returned upon itself and passed through one of the loops, whereby a bight or loop is formed to receive one end of the part to be secured.
3. Adevice for adjustingand securing straps and ropes, comprising a strap having a loop or keeper at each end and having the portion between said loops or keepers made tapering or wedge-shaped and returned upon itself to form a bight o1- loop, said loops or keepers adapted to receive the part to be secured; and said bighb adapted to receive one end of said part to clamp and secure the same when the loops or keepers are drawn apart.
4:. The combination with the strap or rope loop when the loops or keepers are drawn apart.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands.
EDWARD R. ROBBINS.
V LU L. WALRATH.
