CHARLES RAND AND FRANCIS H. AUDLEY, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
HAND-LOOP FOR DRIYING-REINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,274, dated July 1,1884.
(N0 model.)
fa all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. RAND and FRANCIS H. AUDLEY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving-Rein Hand-Loops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents a part of a driving-rein to which our improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, the slides and keepers being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to promote convenience in attaching, adj usting, and using driving-rein hand-loops.
The invention consists in a series of hand loops provided with an end loop, slides, and keepers for securing the said hand-loops to a driving-rein and readily adjusting the said loops upon a rein, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents a driving-rein; B, a series of two or more hand-loops, each of which is formed of a strap bent into U shape, the ends of the arms of which are sewed to the preceding loop, 13, upon the opposite sides or upon the same side of its bend. The end of the inner arm of the forward loop, B, is passed around the center bar of the shield O, and is sewed to itself and to the end of the other arm, as shown in Fig. 2. To the last loop B, upon the opposite sides of its bend, are sewed the ends of a small loop, D, the bend of which is passed around the center bar of a second slide, 0, and the arms of which loop are sewed together near the bend, the end of the outer arm being left a little longer than the end of the other arm, as shown in Fig. 2. The inner arms of the loops B D are held close to the rein A by keepers E, passed around the said arms and rein, as shown in Fig. 2. With this construction the -loops B will always stand open, so that the driver can readily pass his hand through either of the said loops. WVith this construction. also, the slides O can be readily moved forward or back upon the rein A, to adjust the position of the hand-loops upon the said rein.
A special advantage of this improvementis that the driver can drive his team with a tighter or looser rein without stopping to adjust the position of the hand-loops upon the reins by simply moving his hands from one to another of the loops B.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A series of hand-loops, B 1), provided with slides O, a small loop, D, and keepers E, substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt the said loops to be readily applied to and adjusted upon a drivingrein, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a driving-rein, A, of a series of connected hand-loops, B, and end loop, D, slides O, and keepers E, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the saidloops can be readily adjusted upon the reins, and the team can be driven with tighter or looser reins without adjusting the handloops, as set forth.
CHARLES E. BAND. FRANCIS H. AUDLEY.
