Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE RKELSEY, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT. y
IMPROVEMENT IN BELT-BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,1130, dated October 2, 1866.
`To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. KELsEY, of West Haven, in the coun ty of New Haven and State ot" Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fa-steners for Ladies Skirt-Belts, &c. 5 andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operat-ion of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which make part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the belt with the fastener attached, showing the eyelet into which it is to be hooked. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the fastener complete, showing all of the parts in their places. Fig. 3 is a plan of the bow or fra-nie. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lever part. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the hook part.
My improvement consists in constructing the buckle or fastener substantially of the saine character as tha-t described in my patent issued May 29, 1866, and adding thereto a hook which works with an independent hinge and is tted to hook into an eyelet in one end of the belt, so that no sewing or other permanent fastening is required at either end of the belt, and yet so that the tightness of the belt may be adjusted at pleasure, and the fastener may be removed at pleasure, as for washing, 86e., and again attached without any extraneous assistance.
I make the bow or frame by simply bend ing the wire in a die or swage to the form si wn at a, Fig. 3, and indicated at c, Figs. 1 and 2, where it is partially concealed by the hinge of the hook b.
I make the lever part or tongue (around nich the running part of the belt is to pass) substantially of the form shown in Fig. 4, having its two ends bent, as shown at d el, to form the eye parts of the hinge. These two parts, or either of them, may be made of iiattened wire, if thought best, and are made and put together substantially as described in my patent issued May 29,1866.
Imake the hook part substantially as shown (partially formed) in Fig. 5, and as shown when attached to the frame by its independent hinge at b, Figs. 1 and 2, with the hook e made of the proper form to be hooked into a suitable eyelet, substantially as shown at e, Figs. 1,2, and 5.
Having made the three parts as shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and put them together, and closed or set down the eye parts of the hinges, the fastener or buckle, will be complete, as represented in Fig. 2.
To use this fastenerI make or insert an eyelet in one end of the belt, as shown at e, Fig. 1, and pass the other or running end, A,inside of and 'around the lever or tongue-part c and back under the bow a, so that when the hook is hooked into the eyelet at c the whole will appear as represented in Fig. 1.
If it be desired to tighten the belt, take hold of the end A of the belt and draw it farther through; butif desired to loosen it push the end A back through the buckle; and in either case, as soon as the strain is allowed to act whollyon the partB of the belt, the parts a and cof the buckle will be pressed together, so as 'to bind the belt immovably tight, so that no sewing or other fastening is required to keep the buckle in its place, and only one eyeletis needed, and the buckle may be taken oft for washing, &c., at pleasure.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the bow, Fig. 3, lever, Fiff. 4, and hook, Fig. 5, when they are constructed, put together, and tted for use substantially as herein described and set forth.
GEO. R. KELSEY. Witnesses:
LEONARD J. MERCHANT, It. FITZGERALD.
