  • My improvement consists in making the buckle of two pieces of wire, of any suitable metal, by swaging them into the shape substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then putting them together, as represented in Fig. l, so that the tongues will rest across and be supported by the shanks ot' the bow part.
  • Fig. 1 shows the tongues c and c resting on and across the shanks of the bow, so as to form a buckle of greater strength than that for which a patent was issued to me dated July 24:, 1860, though not so elastic, yet better for some purposes, and somewhat cheaper to manufacture.

Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,568, dated February 13, 1866.
To all rwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SHELDON S. HARTs- HORN, ofthe city and county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buckles as a new article ot' manufacture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction, character, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs,which make part of this specilication, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of the buckle complete and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bow part of the buckle, ready to receive the tongue part. Fig. 3 is a perspective yiew ot' the tongue part properly formed.
My improvement consists in making the buckle of two pieces of wire, of any suitable metal, by swaging them into the shape substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and then putting them together, as represented in Fig. l, so that the tongues will rest across and be supported by the shanks ot' the bow part.
I make the bow part B of the buckle of a piece ot' brass wire, or of any other suitable metal, and with proper dies swage it into shape, substantially as represented in Fig. 2, leaving the loops or eyes open, as shown at a and a, in a situation to receive the tongue part, Fig. 3,'it being the same as the bow part of my buckle for which a patent was standing part of the strap, not only as a complete loop, but continuing the parts until they lap onto each other the whole extent of the space between the tongues, while the dies will swage or set them together for that distance, flattening the adjacent sides, so that they will be about the shape and size ot' a single part of the wire, substantially as shown in the laps at b, Figs. 1 and 3; and I bend the tongues c and c (by the same operation of the dies) at right angles, so that the whole will appear substantially as represented in Fig. 3. I then place the tongue part, Fig. 3, into the loops or eyes a and a in the bow part, Fig. 2, and with proper dies close down the loops or eyes, when the whole buckle will appear as in Fig. 1, which shows the tongues c and c resting on and across the shanks of the bow, so as to form a buckle of greater strength than that for which a patent was issued to me dated July 24:, 1860, though not so elastic, yet better for some purposes, and somewhat cheaper to manufacture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture, is-
The combination of the bow part, Fig. 2, with the tongue part, Fig. 3, when the tongue part is so formed that two portions of it lap, as atb, and the tongues rest on and across the shanks of the bow part, and the whole is constructed substantially as herein described.
