UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM A. HURST, OF MAQUOKETA, IOWA.
METAL HEAD FOR BARRELS, CA SKS, AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM A. HURsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ma quoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Heads for Barrels, Casks, and the Like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in heads or closures for barrels, casks, tubs and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a closure of this character formed from one piece of sheet metal and adapted to close the ends of the barrels or other containers to which the same is applied and also to serve as a binding hoop for the ends of the staves forming the sides of the container, means being provided whereby the heads may be securely fastened after being arranged in position.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the heads removed from the barrel.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the head which is formed from a square flat piece of sheet or flexible metal having struck out or pressed therein a circular chine or groove 2 with which the ends of the barrel staves are adapted to be engaged when the heads are arranged in position thereon, the chine or groove thus forming a binding hoop for the ends of the barrel staves and also provide a cap or cover for said ends,
the corners 3 of the sheet or piece of metal in Specification of Letters Patent.

which the chine or groove is formed will pro ject inwardly against the side of the barrel orcontainer and through said corners and into the staves may be driven nails or other fastening device by means of which the heads are securely fastened in place on the ends of the containers.
The circular portion of the head within the surrounding chine has pressed therein a centrally disposed circle 4 from which radiates a series of corrugations or ribs 5.
When the heads are engaged with the ends of the barrel or container, the endsof the staves are fitted and champed into the groove or chine 2 to form a liquid tight closure for the containers. v
The chine or groove 2 forms with an annular step an'echelon portion, 01. e., a series of annular steps or ofl'set portions which not only reinforce the entire head but make the placement of the staves much easier.
A head constructed as herein shown and described may be applied to any form of barrel, cask, keg or tub and will serve to form a perfect closure therefor as well as a binding hoop and protecting cap for the ends of the staves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A closure formed from a metal sheet of substantially square outline having pressed therein a circular echelon portion and thereby forming a chine or groove adapted to receive the ends or edges of a receptacle to which said closure may be applied and to also define the head, said metal sheet having its corners extending up along the side of the receptacle in engagement therewith and provided with apertures to receive fastening devices and the head provided with a series of radially extending bracing ribs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ABRAHAM A. HURST. Witnesses:
ADAM RINGLEP, W. O. GORDON.
