SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent Application filed February 3, 1891- cask or vessel to the body of the same and to enable the head or cover to be readily removed and replaced.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a butter-tub embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a butter-tub, having tapering tom with hoops 2 and 3, and having its upper edges provided with a circular flange 4, adapted to engage a corresponding groove 5 in a cover 6, whereby an air-tight joint is provided, which is essential in this class of vessels where butter and other perishable articles are packed.
The cover 6 is provided on its upper or outer face with side cleats 7 and an intermediate cleat S, and has at diametrically-opposite points perforations 9, which extend through the cover and the cleats and in which are arranged rods 10. The rods 10 have their lower ends formed into hooks 11 to engage the hoop 2, and they have their upper ends 12 threaded and receiving thumb-nuts 13, which bear against washers 14 and hold the hooks 11 in engagement with the hoop 2. The body of the tub is provided with recesses 15 to receive the hooks 11 and enable the same to readily engage the hoop 2 and be released therefrom. By constructing the tub with tapering sides the effect of tightening the thumb-nuts 13 is to hold the cover more securely, and also to draw the hoop 2 up the tapering sides of the body and thereby tightening the tub and more securely hold the parts of the tub together and avoiding all liability of straining the tub by tightening No. 450,261, dated April 14, 1891. Serial No. 380,069. (No man.)
the rods, as would be the case were the body of the tub centrally bulged as in the ordinary construction of barrels. The washer 14: is interposed between the thumb-nuts and the cover and prevents the latter being grooved or otherwise injured by the nuts.
It will readily be seen that the means for securing the cover to the tub are simple and inexpensive in construction, and are adapted to tightening the parts of the tub and prevent any liability of the latter becoming weakened or falling to pieces by the securing of the cover.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the invention applied to a butter-tub; but it will readily be seen that it is equally applicable to various kinds of packing and storing vessels where a secure and air-tight joint is required, or advantageous between the cover or head and the body.
What I claim is- .1. The combination, with the body having tapering sides and provided with the hoop 2, of the cover provided with perforations, the rods arranged in the perforations and provided with hooks to engage the hoop, and means for tightening the rods, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the body having tapering sides and provided with the hoop 2, the cover provided with perforations, the rods arranged in the perforations and having their lower ends formed into hooks to engage the hoop, and having their upper ends threaded, and the thumb-nuts engaging the threaded ends of the rods, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the body having the hoop 2 and provided with recesses arranged at the lower edge of the hoop, the cover provided with perforations, the rods arranged in the perforations and having their upper ends threaded and their lower ends provided with hooks arranged in the recesses and engaging the hoop, and the thumb-nuts arranged on the threaded ends of the rods, substantially as described.
