CHURN-COVER FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,789, dated October 25, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jenn D. Pownns, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Shoreham, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn-Cover Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art toWhichit-appertainstomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide simple and convenient devices for securing the lid or cover of a revolving barrel-churn whereby leakage is effectually prevented and strength, combined with lightness of parts, is attained.
The invention consists in the construction and the combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a churn-barrel having its lid se cured by my improved fastening devices. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the lid or cover, having a metallic rim formed with an outwardly-projecting bottom flange. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the band or hoop encircling the churn-barrel, and having outwardly-projecting lugs.
TheletterA designates a churn-barrel, which is provided with the customary central trunnious for hanging it in a supportingfi'ame and permitting it to be revolved by a crank-handle generally applied to one of said trunnions. The open end of the churn barrel is closed by a cover or lid, 13, which is of the same size as said opening, so as to fit into the same. The cover is encircled by an edge rim, 0, having an outwardly- 'irojectiiig bottom flange, D, and an in wardly-projecting top flange, E. The latter rests on the top surface of the cover, and is provided with perforated ears 0, through which are passed wood-screws for securing the rim (J to the cover. The inner surface of the ring 0 is made inclined, and rests against the beveled edge of the coverB, as is clearly shown in Fig.1.
A metallic rim or hoop, F, encircles the top of the churn-barrel, its upper edge being flush with the top edge of said barrel, and said ring has two or more outwardly-extending projections or lugs, G. The ring is made of the same size throughout its entire circumference, and is preferably constructed of wrought iron for combining strength with lightness. \Voodscrews or other fastening devices, passing through holes in the ring, secure the latter to the churn-barrel. The outwardly-projecting bottom flange, D, of the rim 0 rests on the top edge of the churn -barrel and on the ring or hoop carried by the latter, and it does not project beyond said hoop.
A detachable or independent ring, H, having an inwardly-projecting flange, I, serves to secure the cover to the churn-barrel. The ring is made sufficiently large to pass over the cover and the churn-barrel, and it has inclined planes or oblique bottom flanges, J, which are so arranged in relation to each other that when the ring H is properly applied in position the lugs or projectionsGon the hoop of the churn-barrel will enter between the adjacentends of a pair of such inclined planes. the ring is turned, causing the projections to glide over the inclined planes, which will serve to press the flange I of the ring upon the bottom flange of the rim of the cover. In this manner the latter is firmly and closely held in contact with the churn barrel to obviate all leakage and prevent the displacement of said cover during the operation of the churn.

I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to secure the cover of a barrel by means of a ring having inclined planes engaging with metallic rims on the barrel and its cover, the fastening being in many particulars similar to the devices employed i'or'fastening fruit-jars.
I disclaim the method of fastening barrelcovers in question, and confine myself to the precise details of construction shown in the present instance, whereby I secure cheapness, lightness, and strength ot'the componentparts, which are most essential requisites in the fastening for the cover of abarrel-churn on account of the size of the band and cover."
