Description
UNITED STATES PATENT DFFTCE.
CHARLES H. VOUTE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT'IN BARREL-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [75,790, dated April 4, 1876; application filed March 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. VOUTE, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Barrel Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a transverse vertical section of my barrel-head and Figs. 2 and 3 are edge views thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a barrel'head and the means for connecting the same to the body of the barrel, for the purpose of making the same air and water tight, and is especially designed for barrels used in the removal of night soil or other filth by the odorless system, and for garbage-barrels.
1n the annexed drawing, A represents the barrel, with bottom, B, constructed in any of the known and usual ways, so as to be perfectly air and water tight. Around the upper edge of the barrel A is secured a hoop, .0, made of cast or other metal, and provided at its upper edge with an outwardly-projecting circumferential flange, 0, having two or more notches, a a, at suitable intervals, and the under surface of said flange made inclined from the notches. vD represents the top or top head of the barrel, made of wood, with a circular ofi-set, b, so that. the main body of the top will fit in the barrel, while the-flange around the edge of the top is on top of the barrel. The angle of the offset b is grooved, as shown, or, in other words, the upper portion of the vertical part of the offset is cut inclined inward as at b, and in this groove is placed a heavy rubber ring or gasket, d. When the top D is placed on the barrel, a flanged ring, G, is placed on the same, the flange on said ring being provided with two or more inward-projecting lugs,i i, which pass through the notches a. a in the flange C, and by now turning the ring G said lugs pass or ride on the under side'of the flange O, and make the top perfectly air and water tight. The groove b in the ofl'set b on the top D not only retains the rubber gasket in place, but as the top is pressed down the gasket is caused to spread bpth inward and outward and make a completely tight joint. The top D.,is provided with the usual connection E for the pump.
1n the odorless system for removing nightsoil, &c., two barrels have heretofore been used, namely, one for the pump, and one with an iron water-tight lid for such material as the pump can not take out.
This barrel may also be used for garbage or any other filth requiring much handling, and the whole head can easily be removed for emptying.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's
The combination, with a barrel, of the metal band C, with notched flange O, the top or head D, with circular offset b, with groove or incline b, the rubber gasket d, and flanged ring G, with lugs i, all constructed substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
QHARLES H. VOUTE.
