WVILLIAM S. SNYDER, OF WAPAKONETA, OHIO.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,706, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed June 29, 1889. Serial No. 316,009. (No model.)
To all whom, it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I,W1LLrAM-S. SNYDER,.a citizen of the United States, residing at WVapakoneta, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to barrel-churns; and the purpose thereof is to provide simple and improved means for securing the cover of the churn to its body in such manner as to form a tight joint between the parts, the clamping devices being capable of locking and releasing the cover by a single instantaneous movement.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use said invention, I will now describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a churn in which my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the churn head or top in the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the central clamping-ring. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional elevation showing one of the journalsupports of one of the locking-yokes. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the action of the locking mechanism.
In the drawings, the reference-numeral 1 denotes the body of the churn, which may be fastened at top and bottom by hoops 2, having their ends connected by clamping-screws 3, by which the'hoops may be tightened.
Upon the upper end of the churn is mounted a cast-metal lid-rin g 4, having a flange 5, which enters a kerf in the staves. posed of cast metal, and is provided upon its upper surface with a raised rib 6, formed near the opening, by which access is obtained to the churn. The lid or cover consists of a wooden disk 7, having a metal ring or binding 8, secured to its upper surface by screws, and having a flange inclosing the periphery of the wooden cover, which is provided at its edge with a circumferential channel receiv- This ring is coming a packing-ring 9, lying. in said channel and partly inclosed by the flange of the metal rin 8.
P rojecting from the periphery of the ring 8 are lugs 12, separated from each other by substantially equal intervals. Rising from the lid-ring 4 at similar intervals are brackets 13, which receive journals or pivots 14 upon the ends of yoke-shaped bars 15, provided at or about their middle portions with curved plates 1.6,which rest, when the yokes are turned down, upon the lid-ring upon the edges of the staves, which project above the said ring, as shown. Upon the ends of each yoke, substantially in line with the pivotal axis thereof, are mounted adjustable cam-lugs 17, which may be formed of screw-threaded bolts tapped into the ends of the yokes.
In use-the cover is fastened and hermetically sealed by laying it upon the lid-ring, with the packing-ring 9 upon the raised seatrib 6. The yokes are then raised and the cover is turned until the lugs 12 are brought opposite the brackets 13, whereupon the yokes are turned down until the curved plate 16 rests upon the chine. This movement brings the cam-lugs 17 down againt the lugs 12, forcing the packing-ring 9 down tightly upon its seat, while the cam-lugs 13 are turned just far enough so that the upward strain of the cover tends to hold the yokes down instead of throwing them up and releasing the cover.
Upon the body of the churn is mounted a central hoop or ring 18, clamped thereon by means of bolts 3, similar to those used on the end hoops. Upon one of the half-sections of this clamping-ring 18 are formed journals 19, one of which has a squared end 20, to enable the operator to mount the churn in journalsupports and attach a crank in the usual manner.
That I claim is- 1. In a churn, the combination, with a lidring lying within the staves and having a raised rib or seat, of a cover having a packing-ring lying on the seat and provided with lugs projecting from its periphery, and yokes having journals at their ends lying in bracket-supports on the 1id-ring, and provided with adjustable cam-lugs bearing upon the lugs of the cover, substantially as described.
2. In a churn, the combination, with a lidring 4:, having a raised rib or seat 6, of a cover 7, having a packing-ring 9 and provided with lugs 12, yokes 15, journalcd at their ends in brackets 13 on the lid-rin g and provided with adjustable cam-lugs 17, mounted on the ends 10 of the yokes and substantially in line with the axis thereof, said yokes being provided with curved plates 16, mounted on their middle portions, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
