Description
t'uihed tant THEODORE W. RYDING,
OF TULLY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent N 95,937, dated October 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAG-ES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all ich-om it may concern Be it known that I, Trinooonn W. RYDING, of
Tully, in the countyl of Onondaga., and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, iu which- -Figure 1 is a sectional side view or elevation, and
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
4This invention rela-tes to certain improvements in buttertubs, rkns, 85e., whereby the head of the package is secured, liquid-tight, in a simple and accessible manner, as hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings- A is the tub;
B is the head;
C is the cross-head; and
I) D are the clamping-screws.
I construct my tub with a groove in its upperedge, and fill said groove with a packing, a, of rubber, or other suitable material. lhe head B is then placed over the end of the tub and clamped down firmly by a strong cross-head, O, and clamping-screws D d D d.
By these means the head is closed water and airtight, and the tub can be stowed, bottom up, so that the brine will work from the bottom to the top of the package, and not leak ont, and the butter kept sweet and good, and without liability of -being damaged or spoiled.
The package is ver-y accessible, and can be opened and again closed, air-tight, with -very little trouble.
`The cross-head O is made thick in its central part, so that the clamping-screws D d D d are protected from injury when thc packages are stowed er piled on top ofeaeh other; andthcy can be placed on their heads or tumbled about without said screws being damaged.
'The ends of the cross-head are also rounded, as shown in fig. 2, so that the package can be rolled as ordinaril 'lle screw-bolts D are mainly secured to the upper hoop c, and this not only secures the hoop in place, but it' the staves become slack, the screws force the hoop further on to the tub and keep all tight.
'lhe iron iittings are of cast malleable iron, and are provided at a light expense, the whole making a very convenient and reliable package.
l donot claim broadly the use oi screws and nuts for securing the covers of fruit-jars and other vessels, as I am aware that this is not new; neither flo i. claim attaching the fastening-screws to a hoop, band, .or collar encircling the vessel, as this has been done prior to the date of my invention; but having thus described my invention,
That-.l claim as new, and desire to secure by Lctters Patent, is-
'.lhe improved butter-package, herein described, as a new article of nianuihcture, the same consisting oi a tub, A, with packingfgroove a', the cover crosspiece C, screws l), riveted to the tub anffl to the hoop e of the tub, and the nuts l d, when the cross-piece has its ends cnt away, so that the screws and nuts do not project, all the parts being constructed and arranged suhstantially as herein described.
The above specilication of my invention signed by me, this 12th day of J une, 1869.
LHEODORE W, RYDING.
