IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, J. M. IV. KITCHEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have made and invented new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the sama, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters-of reference marked thereon.

The present invention relates more particularly to that class of fruit-jars provided with a screw-thread for receiving the top or cover; and consists, first, in a novel formation of the said screw-thread to the jar and its cover; and, second, in providing the cover with a vent-hole for allowing the escape of gases generated from the fruit, 85e., in the jar, when at such avpressure as to be liable to cause a breakage or bursting of the jar. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improvements in fruit-jars are illustrated- I Figure 1 being arcentral vertical section of a fruit-jar constructed according thereto.

A, inthe drawings, represents thejarfto whichB is the mouth and C the cover or top. The mouth, around its inside, is provided with lugs D, which in the present instance are two in number, and` upon opposite sides, with the under edge of the lugs, in each case, made of a convex shape from end to end. F, lugs upon the sides of the stopper, of suitable size to pass between the lugs to the jar, and to come underthem', wherever by their upper convex edge G, from one end to the other, they act, the lugs to'both jar and cover being suieiently inclined or made spiral in direc-tion to cause the stopper to be firmly drawn down, and upon the top to thc jar, whereon it thus becomes packed by a packing-ring, H. I, a vent-hole in the side of top 0,' above the packingring H. In this vent-hole a plug, J, ts, and thus closes the same, which plug is attached to an elastic band, K, arranged around'and secured to the top or cover C.

As the plug to the vent-hole is attached to an elastic band, it is susceptible of yielding to the pressure of gases upon the inside of thejar, provided it is snicient to cause a bursting thereof', it' not so allowed to escape. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent The vent-plug, when attached to an elastic band, or its equivalent, and arranged for operation substantially as described for the purpose set forth. p
