To a/ZZ whom it' may concern,.-
' Be it known that I, VICTOR BIART, captain United States Army, retired, residing at Stuttgart, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improved Cover for Fruit-J ars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fruit jars.
The object of my inventionfis to provide a jar specially adapted for preserving fruits or vegetables.
In the usual method of preserving fruits and the like, the articles to be preserved are placed in thejars and heat then applied to expel the air from the jar. In some cases, the lid is applied to the jar and held down by a spring which yields when the internal pressure is sufficient to overcome its resistance.
My invention consists in a jar `especially constructed for use in the manner last set forth, and particularly in a device for determining the proper pressure to be applied to the spring. Y
My invention further consists in a rubber packing ring of novel construction.
My invention also consists in the features, details and combinations of parts which will iirst be described in connection withsthe accompanying drawings and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, of a jar embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a top plan view, and Fig. 4 atransverse section through the clamp, c, and screw, d.
Referring to the drawings, A is a jar provided with a lip or flange, a, at its mouth and having its upper edge ground flat. On the top edge of the jar is placed a horizontal annular ring, g, of flexible material, preferably india-rubber. This ring, which may be termed the packing ring, is provided with a vertical annular projection, g', rising from the inner periphery of the horizontal portion, g. Upon the portion, g, of the packing ring is placed a cover, B, provided with an annular downward-extending flange, b', whose lower face is ground, for a purpose yhereinafter described. In using my apparatus, the jar, when filled with the articles to be preserved, is covered by putting on the packing ring, g, and cover, B, after which the spring, D, and yoke, C, are put in place and the thumbscrew, d, turned to force the central portion of the spring, D,
down until the lower-edge of the said spring is just level with the upper edge of the lugs, b. If, now, the jar be exposed to heat in any suitable manner, the internal-pressure of the air and steam will force the cover, B, upward [and thus permit the confined air to escape.
When all the air has been driven out of the jar, thelatter is. then permitted to cool, the
atmospheric pressure being then sufficient to hold thelid in place without the aid of the yoke and spring, which may then be removed and applied to another jar.
It is to be observed that the top edge of the jar and the lower edge ofthe cover or lid are both `without indentations, so that they can each be ground on the edges without inconvenience whereby a better joint is made between the jar, packing ring and cover.
The object of providing the packing ring with a vertical annular projection is to prevent the internal pressure from blowing out the said packing ring, and it is obvious'that, instead of the said vertical annular projection, a series of vertical lugs may be employed'.
The lugs, b, on the cover, B, are so proportioned with' relation to the strength of the spring, D, that when the said spring is compressed to the level of the top of thelugs, the pressure exerted to hold the cover on the jar will besuch as is proper to allow the escape of air and prevent bursting of the vessel.
I am aware that jars provided with springheld covers are old, but so far as I have any ICO knowledge, none of such jars have projections on the lid for the purpose of indicating the proper amount ot' tension on the spring.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a fruit jar, of a cover provided with upward-projecting gagelugs arranged with a space between them, `a l yoke arranged to engage the fruit jar, a screw passing through the yoke, and a spring located over the .space between the lugs `and having its ends resting on the cover, its central portion coinciding `with the screw, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a'fruit-jar having a flange around its `mouth,a yoke engaging the flange, a screw passing through the yoke, and a spring beneath the lower end 4ot the screw, of a cover providedwith ian upwardprojecting lug `arranged `at `one side `of the spring, substantiallylas set forth.
3. The combination, with a fruit-jar having a flange around its mouth, of a cover provided with upward-projecting lugs arranged with a space `between them, ya yoke engaging `the llange, a screw passing through the yoke,.and a spring located over thespace Abetween the lugs ,and having its ends resting on the cover,
its central portion contacting-.with the screw, substantially as set forth.
4. A packing ring for fruit-jars comprising an `annular portion and a vertical projecting portion rising from the innerperiphery ofthe annular portion, substantially asset forth.
5. A packing ring for fruitjars comprising an annular-horizontal portion `and an annular vertical `portion connected to the horizontal annularportion at the inner perpheryof the latter, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination, with `a fruit-jar, a cover having an annular downward-extending Ilange, and means for holding the cover onto the jar, of apacking ring havinga horizontal annular portion interposed between the lower surface of the flange on the cover and the upper surface of the jar, and a vertical portion extending upward inside the flange on the cover and contacting therewith, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with a fruitjar, a cover having an annular downward-extending flange, and rneansfor holding the cover onto the jar, of a packing ring having a horizon-tal annular portion interposed between the lower surface of the flange on the cover and the upper surface of the jar, and an annular vertical portion extending upward inside the flange on the cover, and contacting therewith, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with a fruit-jar having a flange aroundits mouth,.a .cover `having an annular `downward-extending llange, a `yoke engaging the `flange on the jar, and means intermediate the yoketand coverfor holding the latter onto the jar, ofa packing-ring having a horizontal annular portioninterposed between thelower surface of the flange on the cover andthe upper surface of thejalyand a vertical portion extending `upward inside the flange on thecoverand contacting therewith, substantially as set forth.
9. The combnatiomwitha fruit jarhaving a flange around its mouth, a cover having-an annular `downward-extending flange, a yoke engaging the pilange `on the jar, and means intermediate the yoke and cover for holding the latter onto the jar, of a packing ring having a horizontal annular portion interposed between the lower Surfaceiof the flange on `the coverand theuppensurface of the jar, and an annular vertical portion extending upward inside the `flange on the cover andlcontacting therewith, substantially as set forth.
