FRUIT' JAR COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 860.165, dated March 29,1887.
Application filed February 4, 1887. Serial No. 226,572. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS I R. LE (JoMrTE, of Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, have invented certaiu'new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing a jar and cover made in accordance with my invention, the cover being locked on the jar; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the bails down and the cover unlocked.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the several figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to fruit-jars and the covers therefor, and has for its object to furnish a jar and cover in which any desired pressure can be brought to bear upon the cover in hermetically sealing the same, and in which said pressure is properly distributed in several points in both jar and cover.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is an ordinary fruit-jar, which is provided with apair of bails,B G,each of which has an inward-point ing end, 6 I) c c, on each side of the jar. These bails may be varied in shape, it being neces sary that they shall be secured at their ends to the jar and pass over the top D. The points of fastening of the ends I) b c c of the bails to thejar are such that the ends of each bail are not diametrically opposite to each other, but are so situated that the points on the same side of the jar where the ends I) c are secured are ata considerable distance apart. The bails B 0, when in securing position, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, pass across the top in parallel lines at substantially the same distance apart.
D is the top of the jar, the central portion of which projects slightly into the mouth of the jar, and it has an annular flange, which rests on the top of the jar, a packing-ring, E, being interposed. On its upper surface the top D is provided with a vertical rib, F,which may be formed integrally with the top, or may be secured thereto in an undercut groove, G, as shown, or in any other desired manner. The upper surface of this rib curves or inclines downward from its highest central point to the ends of the rib at the edges of top, and is provided. with serrations f f. The outer edge of the top may also be provided with serrations.
\Vhcn it is desired to close the jar, the pack ing-ring is placed on top of it, the top put thereon in position, so that its rib F stands at right angles with the central portions of the bails B and O, and the bails pressed toward each other.
As before stated, the ends Z) and c and b and c are about sixty degrees apart, leaving two spaces of about one hundred and twenty degrees each outside these ends. These spaces are substantially bisected by the rib F at the points Z) c, so that when the bails are pressed toward each other and moved up the double inclined rib F, engaging in the serrationsff, pressure will be exerted specially at the six substantially equidistant points b b I) c c c, and if more pressure is needed at any particular point of the jar and top, one of the bails will pass farther up the inclined rib than the other, and thus secure the needed 'perfect contact and 7 equally-distributed compression of the packing.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a jar witha bail which engages an incline on the top, and consequently do not make claim to such a construction.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the United States, is
1. A fruit -jar having two bails pivoted thereto, in combination with a coverprovided with two inclined notched surfaces to engage said bails, as set forth.
2. A fruit 'ar having two bails pivoted thereto, in combination with a cover provided with a central diametricallyarranged rib projecting upward from said cover and having notched surfaces inclined downward from the center of the cover, as set forth.
3. In combination, the jar A, having bails B and C pivoted thereto, one on each side of 9 a line drawn centrally through the jar, and the cover E, having rib F projecting upward therefrom, the surfacesf andf of said rib being inclined downward from the center toward the opposite sides of the cover, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEVIS P. R. LE COMPTE.
