TOP FOR FRUIT JARS. No. 318,029. Pep-tented May 19, 1885. i
I 5 fnvenfbm WFTn ess es 13. R/Zfu WW 1 fismzf fim/W WM UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EPHRAIM B. REP]? AND GEORGE HENRY BROWVN, OF NEXV WINDSOR, MD.
TOP FOR FRUIT-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,029, dated May 19,1885
Application filed August 13, 1884. (No model.)
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EPHRAIM B. REPP and G. H. BROWN, of New Windsor, Carroll county, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tops for Fruit- Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the upper part of a jar with our improved top and fastening applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the top and fastener; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 1, showing the same parts and in the same position as that in Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in all the figures.
Our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, whieh will be first fully described, and afterward specifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is the body of ajar, which is provided at its top with a projecting rim or ledge, a, which rim is grooved on opposite sides, as at a, Fig. 3.
B is the top, which is provided with a central upwardly-projecting knob, 72, and this knob is divided centrally from top to bottom by an upright groove, 1).
G is a bent wire, the main body of which lies in a horizontal position in the bottom of the groove Z2, and which is bent at its ends downward, forming upright portions 0, which rest in notches b in the edge of the top B. The lower ends of these upright portions 0 are bent inward at c.
A bail, D, is coiled at at around the horizontal body of the wire 0, near the edges of the top, and is furnished with straight ends d.
When it is desired to hermetically seal a jar, a rubber packing-ring or other suitable device is placedthereon and the top B placed in position. The hooks 0 of the wire 0 are passed downward through the notches a in the rim a, and the lid or top turned partly around, causing said hooks to pass under the rim a. The bail D during this operation is in the position shown in Fig. 2,-lying flat upon the top B. In order to tightly clamp the top to the jar, it is only necessary to turn the bail to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the bail acting as a cam and serving to force the top down, compressing the rubber, if any be used, or, if no rubber gasket be used, utilizing the elasticity of the wire of which the bail and wire clamp C are made, to permit the bail D to turn from one of its positions to the other. The cover B may have a downward flange outside of the neck of the jar, or may have a depending portion fitting inside of the jar, or may have a plain under surface resting on the jar-neck. The straight ends d of the bail now rest flat upon the top, and serve to hold the parts in position, the bail projecting'upward, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and forming a handle by which the jar may be carried.
The advantages of this construction are that the contact between the hooks c and the glass rim only takes place when the top is fastened, thus obviating the tendency to split off the glass of the jar by turning on an inclined rim; also, that while the bail and wire 0 are perfectly free for adjustment, they cannot by any accident be lost off the top, and are always ready for use; also, when the jar is sealed the bail is firmly held in an upright position ready to be used as a handle.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A top forjars, consisting of the main body B, notched at If, and provided with a knob, b, notched centrally at b, in combination with the wire 0, having downward projections c, and hooks c, and a bail, D, coiled around the wire 0, and provided with straight ends d, for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the jar A, having rim a, provided with notches a,.the top B, having notches b and centrally-slotted knob I), the wire 0, having downward projection 0 and hooks a, and the bail D, coiled around the wire G, and having straight ends d, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two witnesses.
EPHRAIM B. REPP. GEORGE HENRY BROWN. Witnesses:
