Description
(Model) 0.- JLMURPHY,
FRUIT JAR.
' No. 439,170. Patented Oct. 28, 1890.
. m I H UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. MURPHY, OF EASTPORT, MARYLAND.
FRUIT-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,170, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filedApr-il 7, 1890- Serial No. 34 ,977- (Model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES JAMES MUR- PHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eastport, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fruit-jars in which an eccentric bar extends across the cover and acts in conjunction with a metal band placed about the neck of the jar and removable at will, this band being provided with ears or lugs extending above the ends of the band to receive the trunnions or ends of the eccentric bar, the under part of the band being fitted with clampingears-one near eachend of the band and one or more intermediate thereof.- These clamping-ears are placed under the projecting rim of the jar and receive the strain when the eccentric bar is brought into action. It is not necessary that the neck-band extend entirely around the neck of the jar, it being only essential that its length shall permit such separation of the clamping-ears as will securely hold the band to the rim of the jar. The eccentric bar is fitted with a lever, which throws the bar into and out of action, and such lever has an angular extension I, which engages the flange of the jar when the bar is turned into locking position, and thereby holds the clamp securely in place upon the neck of the jar. A rubber gasket or washer is placed upon the under surface of the cover, which, when the cover is in place and the jar closed, presses upon the upper edge of the jar, and by the action of the eccentric bar the jar is perfectly sealed. I attain these obj ects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the jar complete and closed. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the jar.
A is the bodyof the jar; B, the ears or lugs; O, the cover of the jar; D,the rubber, gasket, or washer; E, the eccentric bar; F, the lever; G, the metal band; H, the clamping-ears; I, the angular extension of the lever F.
Similar letters relate to similar parts throughout the several Views.
In closing the jar the cover 0 is put in I am aware that prior to my invention fruitjars have been made with an eccentric appliance. This I do not claim broadly; but
\Vhat I do claim as my invention, and clesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a clamp for jar-covers, a band G,constructed to clasp and engage the rim of the jar and carrying an eccentric bar'journaled therein, provided with an operating-lever having an angular extension, which, when the lever is thrown down into locking position, engages the rim and secures the clamp in place.
2. In a clamp for jar-covers, the band G, constructed to peripherally engage the rim of the jar and having clamping-ears for engagiug the under side of the rim, combined with an eccentric bar journaled therein and having an operating-lever fitted with an angular extension, which engages the rim of the jar when the lever is turned down, and thus secu rely locks the clamps on the jar.
3. A clamp for the covers of jars, consisting of a band constructed to engage the periphery of the rim of the jar and provided near its ends and intermediate thereof with clampingears H, said band also provided with upwardly-extending cars, which support an eccentric bar,'having a lever provided with an angular extension to engage the rim and hold the clamp securely upon the jar.
4:. In combination with a jar having a projecting rim, a clamping-band fitted to the rim, and clamping-ears, which engage the under side thereof, an eccentric bar journaled in the band, engaging the cover, and'provided with an operating-lever whose outer end is bent at an angle, whereby when turned down to locking position it engages the rim of the jar and locks the clamp in place, all as herein set forth.
CHARLES J MURPHY.
