Be it known that I, ELIHU WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Caps, of which the following is a specication. v v
This invention relates to the general subject of bottle closures, and more particularly to a novel improvement in caps or Stoppers for milk bottles and similar ars. p
A primary object of the invention is to provide a bottle cap device possessing the desirable characteristics of simplicity and easy manipulation in the handling thereof to close or uncover the jar mouth.
In devices of this character, an important consideration is the feature of having the article so designed and formed that it may be reused. This is especially true in connection with milk bottles Where portions of the contents of the bottle are often drawn ofi" at diierent times. Bottles of this type are usually sealed with a cheap paper stopper which easily becomes punctured or broken when initially removing the same, and thereafter does not provide an effective seal for the container. That is to say, the ordinary paper stopper is generally useless after it has been once removed from the bottle mouth, while the stopper or cap contemplated by the present invention is of a more permanent type, while also being of quite an inexpensive and sanitary construction.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a bottle with my improved cap applied thereto, showing the spring locking bail in its raised position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the construction shown in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bottom of the stopper or cap.

the construction of the device, though it is preferable to employ a non-corroding material, such as glass, porcelain, aluminum, or equivalent metal. In the embodiment shown, the cap body, made of such material, is designated by the numeral l and is preferably of circular form. It is provided at the under side thereof with a circular offset forming a sealing plug 2 that fits inside of the mouth of the bottle and which leaves at the edge of the body a peripheral cap flange 3 which seats upon the top peripheral edge of the jar or container. At one edge of the circular cap body the latter has formed integrally therewith a depending bottle-engaging abutment lug 4 which is preferably curved both laterally and vertically to conform to the outlines of the bead at the mouth of the conventional milk bottle.
The top or outer face of the cap body l is preferably provided therein with an upstanding boss 5 which pivotally receives one end of a spring locking bail 6 having an angular clamping end portion 7 adapted to engage with the bead at the mouth of the bottle in the same manner as the abutment member 4. In this connection, it will be noted that the abutment member i and spring locking bail 6 are so arranged that they preferably engage diametrically opposite portions of the bottle mouth, thereby coacting to securely clamp the device in position thereon as shown in Fig. 2.
When applying the cap, the angular locking bail 6 is held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, and the stopper body placed into and over the mouth of the bottle so that the bottle engaging abutment 4 embraces one portion of the bottle mouth, and the offset sealing plug 2 fits into the sealing recess 8 of the bottle. This construction alone would loosely hold the stopper in position for temporary uses, but in order to positively secure the closure device in place on the mouth of the bottle, the locking bail 6 is utilized. This bail is intended to be sprung into the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 so that its clamping end 7 engages over the bead B of the bottle mouth, thus preventing accidental displacement of the cap. In order to remove the device, it is only necessary to press upwardly on the end of the clamping end 7 of the spring locking bail to thereby dseirlgage it from beneath the bead B.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the invention combines simplicity, strength, and durability to the best possible advantage and provides aA stopper device Which includes a fixed abutment 'member for engaging one side of the bottle abutment lug depending from said iiange, and a spring Wire locking bail pivotally carried bythe top of the cap` body, said locking bail having a hooked clamping end Working in opposition to said abutment lug.
