EDWARD NOLTE, OF NEVINVILLE, IOWA.
FRUIT-JAR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,841, dated June 20, 1905.
To a, 1071 0722, if; may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD NOL'IE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Nevinville, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved closure for fruit-jars and similar receptacles, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character by means of which the mouth of the jar may be hermetically sealed and the cap or cover securely locked against accidental displacement.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fruit-jar provided with my improved closure. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig, 3 is a side elevation showing the cap or cover fastener released. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures ofthe drawings.
In the drawings, 5 designates a fruit-jar of the ordinary form and construction and formed of glass, pottery, or other suitable material, said jar being provided with an annular enlargement 6, the upper portion of which is recessed to form a vertical lip 7 and an annular shoulder 8, upon which is seated a rubber gasket 9. The base of the enlargement 6 is provided with oppositely-disposed openings 10, and pivotally supported in said openings are the hooked ends 11 of a lockingbail 12. The intermediate portion of the bail 12 passes through an opening 13 in the short arm of a bell-crank locking-lever 14, said lever being pivoted at 15 between a pair of upwardly-extended lugs 16, secured to or formed integral with clamping-plate 17. The long arm of the lever 14 is curved upwardly to form a terminal handle 18, by means of which said lever may be tilted rearwardly to thereby clamp the plate 17 in contact with the cap or cover 18 of the fruit-jar.
The cap or cover 18 rests on the gasket 9 and is provided with a concave lower face 19 and a flat upper'portion 20 for engagement with the plate 17, thereby preventing accidental displacement of said plate.
It will be observed that the bail-receiving opening 13 is disposed out of alinement with the pivotal pin 15, so that when the lever 14 is tilted rearwardly in contact with the jarcover the tension exerted by the bail 12 will hold said lever in locked position. also be observed that the arms of the bail l2 converge toward the opening 13, thereby avoiding any variation in pressure incident to bending of said arms and insuring an approximately straight pull on the latter when the pivoted lever is tilted to locked position.
From the foregoingdescription it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is u I 1. The combination with a jar and its cover, of a bail pivoted to said jar, a locking-lever engaging the bail, and a clamping-plate pivoted to the lever and locked in contact with the jar-cover by the movement of said lever.
2. The combination with a jar and its cover, of a bail pivoted to said jar, a bell-crank locking-lever engaging said bail, and a clampingplate pivoted to the lever and locked in contact with the jar-cover by the movement of said lever.
3. The combination with a jar and its cover, of a bail pivoted to said jar, a bell-crank locking-lever having its short arm engaging said bail and its long arm extended to form a terminal handle, and a clamping-plate pivoted to the lever and locked in contact with the jarcover by the movement of said lever.
It will 4:. The combination with a jar and its cover, of a bail pivoted to said jar, a bell-crank locking-lever having its short arm engaging said bail, a clamping-plate adapted to engage the jar-cover and provided with outwardly-extending lugs, and a pivotal connection between said lugs and the locking-lever.
5. The combination with a jar and its cover,
of a bail pivoted to said jar, a clamping-plate engaging the jar-cover, and a bell-crank locking-lever having its short arm pivoted to said clamping-plate,there being an opening formed in said locking-lever to one side of its pivotal connection for the reception of the bail.
6. The combination with a jar, and its cover, of an annular enlargement formed at the mouth of the jar and defining a seating-flange for the reception of the cover, there being oppositely-disposed openings formed in said enlargement, a bail provided with terminal hooks adapted to engage said openings, a locking-lever engaging the bail, and a clampingplate pivoted to the lever and locked in contact with the jar-cover by the movement of said lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD NOLTE.
