DE VANE B. SMITH, OF DEERFIELD, NEW YORK.
CAP OR COVER FOR JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,951, dated December 30, 1902.
Application filed December 29, 1900. Serial No. 41,440. (No model.)
To all whom, it rita/y concern/r Be it known that I, DE WANE B. SMITH, of Deerfield, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsnin Caps or Covers for .I ars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which Vwill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the iigures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication.
The object of my present invention is to provide a cap or cover for a jar, particularly a fruit-jar, which, in connection with the packing employed, is adapted to always form a close and air-tight joint between the cover and the jar.
In the drawings, Figure l shows in cross- Sectiou the upper portion of an ordinary glass fruit-jar, such as is in common use and known as a Masons fruit-jar, in connec.- tion with the cap of my improved construction and the packing, each of the latter being shown in cross-section.
Referring io the reference figures in a more particular description, l indicates the jar, which is preferably provided with a cylindrical neck portion 2, having on its outer surface a screw-thread 3. The jar is open at the upper end of the neck portion 2. To the jar is applied the cap or cover 4L, which preferably has a corrugated side 5, affording also the other member of a screw-thread connection, as between the cap and the neck of the jar. The lower portion 6 of the flange of the cap is arranged to stand somewhat out from the neck of the jar, as shown, and the cap is provided with the projecting edge 7, adapted to engage the rubber gasket or packing-ring 8, of other suitable elastic material, which surrounds the neck of the can and rests on the shoulder adjacent to the neck. The projecting rimf7 is arranged, preferably, to engage the packing-ring substantially in the middle, as shown. In addition to the rib 7 there is provided a Iiange portion 9 on the lower edge of the cap adapted to inclose the packing-ring 8 and prevent its displacement, as will be readily understood from the drawings. It will be noted Athat there is an indentation between the rib 7 and the flange 9, which does not engage the packing-ring 8, except perhaps underexcessive pressure.
In the caps for similar use heretofore provided the lower edge of the cap has engaged the packing-ring in such a manner that as the cap is applied and screwed down with sufficient force to adapt it to close the joint airtight the packing-ring 8 was allowed to and was prone to escape from its position either to the outside of the cap or to crawl up the neck of the can within the capthat is to say, this was liable to happen on portions of the circumference-which would make a poor joint. In the operation of my construction, as above described, as the cap is screwed onto the neck the projecting rib 7 engages the packing-ring 8 on its upper surface, and immediately it becomes embedded in the packing-ring, forming a perfectly tight joint around the entire circumference of the cap and preventing it escaping either toward the neck or to the outside of the cap. The flange portion 9 of the cap also assists in preventing the packing-ring from escaping to the outside; but I do not rely as much on this as I do on the projecting rib 7 becoming embedded in the packing-ring. The fiange 9, however, serves to wholly inclose the packingring 8 and presents a better appearance.
This cap is particularly adapted for the screw-thread constructiomwhich requires the cap to be applied with a rotary motion, for it is particularly in this form of construction as heretofore made that the packing-ring, at least on a portion of the circumference, was liable to be displaced and make a defective joint. j
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj The combination of a can having a circlilar externally-screw-threaded neck and a laterally-extending shoulder surrounding the base of the neck, a flat elastic gasket surrounding the neck, resting on said shoulder and a screw-cap haVing a rib 7 standing out In Witness whereof have affixed my signafrom the base of the neck and adapted to en- Iiure, in presence of two Witnesses, this' 22d gage the upper flat surface of the gasket, subday of December, 1900.
stantially in the middle, and also having a DE WANE B. SMITH. 5 flange 9 adapted ro overhang the outer edge Witnesses:
of the gasket and prevent its escape, substan- E. WILLARD JONES,
tially as set forth. S. A. BROWN.
