UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. SILVA, OF SANDUSKY, OHIO.
' COVER FOR CROCKS'AND JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent I\To. 406,542, dated July 9, 1889.
Application filed May 6, 1889. Serial No. 309,737- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. SILVA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Crooks and Jars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in covers for crooks; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of an elastic band adapted to be secured at or near the top of a crock, and of a cover adapted to be engaged thereon to form atight joint, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure 1 is avertical central section through a crock to which my invention is applied. Fig. .2 is a perspective view of the rubber or elastic ring detached.
In the present state of the art earthenware crooks and vessels for storing pickles and other material of that kind are largely used but it has been found extremely difficult to make a tight cover for the same, owipg to the size of the vessel and the expense which it has been found requisite to manufacture such a cover. These crooks usually consist of the vessel A, having at its upper end the outwardly-extending flange or rim B.
My improvement consists in applying below this flange or rim the elastic band C, in the outer edge of which I construct a screwthread a. This elastic band may be passed over the bottom of the can or vessel and slid up to abut with its upper edge against the flange B, and if sufficiently elastic it may be extended sufficiently to pass over the upper flange and be secured in position, as shown in Fig. 1, by its elasticity.
D is a cover, preferably of sheet metal,-
having a suitable handle E, and provided with a depending annular flange, in which I make a screw-thread G, corresponding with the screw-thread a in the rubber band.
The parts being thus constructed, the rubber band being placed upon the crock, as shown in Fig. 1, WltlilliS upper shoulder abutting against the flange B, I place the cover D upon the crock, engage the screw-thread G into the screw-thread a, and tightly screw down the cover, which will make a tight joint all the way around. As the cover is tightly turned down,it will draw up the rubber band, so as to have a close contact on its upper edge against the flange B, and at the same time expanding itmore or less in a horizontal direction as it contracts in the vertical direction, thus adding to the security of the joint which is formed.
In making the cast band I preferably construct it by casting the rubber into the desired form for the size or style of the crock to which it is to be applied.
the use of farmers, grocers, and housekeepers who desire to use crocks for keeping any kind of material requiring an air and water tight joint.
It is evident that in place of the handle E a lug or lugshaving an aperture to receive a suitable tool may be provided to turn the top of the cover to screw it down, and this construction would assist materially in packing a number of vessels together, and it is a preferable construction.
I deem it important that the threaded elastic band be arranged around the outside of the crock, so that whenthe cover is screwed down it will draw up the elastic band against the flange l3, and at the same time expand it laterally, thus effecting a very tight joint.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is The combination, with a crock having the flange B at its upper edge, of the elastic band 0, provided with the screw-thread and encircling the crock just beneath the flange, and cover D,having a depending flange, said flange being provided with a corresponding screw-thread, the parts being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 26th .day of March, 1889.
JAMES A. SILVA.
