U. A. GOX,
FASTENER 'POR BARREL HEADS.
APPLICATION IILED MAY 2a, 1913.
Patented Jul 1 All cnannns a. coat; OVFMQLEANSBORO, ILLINOIS.
FASTENER ron BARREL-HEADS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1d, 191%.
Application filed May 23, 1913. Serial No. 769,523.!
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at McLeansboro, in the county of Hamilton, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Barrel-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in closure heads for barrels.
The invention has for its object to construct a closure of this type, which can be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the barrel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal barrel with a closure head, which when in place will effectually close the barrel.
ll'ith these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimedand illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which 1- Figure l is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is av bottom plan view of the closure head. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the head and barrel on line 3--3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of the flange.
Referring to the drawing. the numeral 1 designates a sheet metal barrel. Secured to the upper edge of the barrel is an annular horizontally disposed flange 3, which may be secured in place in any suitable man nor, and is provided with annular grooves 4. the purpose of which will appear later. The flange 3 is provided with a plurality of stops .3. the same being spaced an equal distance apart, and are formed integral therewith.
The closure head 6 is concavo-convex on cross section. and is provided with a central perforation 7. through which is passed hoh h, the same being provided-with a shoulder 9 which limits the inward movement of said bolt, and also serves to pre vent passage of, any of the contents of the barrel when the same is being handled..
To look the head in place, a hub 10 is provided, and has radiating therefrom. arms 11, said arms being supported in proper respect to the head by loops 12, which are secured to the under surface of said head;
The length of the arms 11 are such that they will freely pass the flange 3, at points unobstructed by the stops 5, but will engage the same when the head is rotated. The hub 10 is provided with a threaded central perforation 13, which is engaged by the lower end of the bolt 8, so that when the same is rotated, through the medium of the han dle 14 carried thereby, the hub and arms will be drawn toward the head 6, whereby the outer ends of the arms will engage. the top plates 15 of the stops 5.
From this construction it will be seen that a closure has been provided for barrels which can be easily and quickly applied or removed, and when in place the rim 16 and the flange 17 of the head will engage the grooves 4 in the flange 3, thus making a tight joint.
What is claimed is In a barrel, the combination with a flange secured to its upper edge and having grooves formed therein, of a closure head having loops carried by its under surface, a bolt passable through said head, a hub engaged by the lower end of the bolt, rigid arms radiating from said hub and engaging said loops, stops carried by the flange and having top plates adapted to, be engaged by the outer ends of said arms, said bolt being operable to draw the hub toward the head,
an annular flange-formed near the rim of said head, whereby the ends of said arms tightly engage the top plates to hold the rim and flange of the head in tight engagement with said grooves.
In testimony whereof, I aftix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. COX.
Witnesses I FELIX MALONE, ISAAC H. WEBB.
