PATENT OFFICE.
REMOVABLE HEAD FOR BARRELS.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,104, dated lVIarch 21, 1905.
Application filed September 3, 1903. Serial No. 171,756. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J AEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Removable Heads for Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in removable heads for barrels, and has for its object to provide a head which may be clamped to the barrel and may be easily removed and replaced Without damaging the barrel.
With these ends in view this inventionconsists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanyingdrawi1igs,form ing a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a barrel constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the upper portion of a barrel constructed according to my invention; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the cross-bar.
A represents the barrel, which is of ordinary construction, with one of theheads solid and made in the ordinary way. The other headconsists of a metallic plate B, secured in the end of the barrel, fitting into an annular groove formed around the inside of the same. This plate B is provided with an oblong opening C, formed through the center of the same, and surrounding this opening on the top and bottom is an annular bead.
D is a removable cover formed concave. This cover D is also oblong, so that its narrowest width may be inserted through the longest width of the opening G. Then after it is inserted in the barrel by turning the cover it will fit against the under side of the plate B, the cover being provided with an annular groove D, which fits the lower bead upon the plate B.
E is an interiorly-threaded stud extending upward from the cover.
'F is'a cross-bar adapted to fit across the opening 0, and the ends of the cross-bar will rest upon the upperbead surrounding the opening. A bolt G extends downward through the cross-bar and is adapted to be threaded into the stud E, andthus draw the cover tightly against the under side of the plate B, and in order to hermetically seal this cover paraflin or like substance D is introduced in the annular groove D, so as to form a perfect seal. Thus it will be seen that in this manner I am enabled to provide a removable cover for a barrel which will close against the under side of the head, and thereby not only be held in place by the bolt G, but if the barrel is filled with any substance which gives off gas the pressure upon the interior of the barrel will help to hold the cover tightly upon its seat.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character described, in combination a wooden barrel formed of staves, one end of which is closed by a wooden head,
-a metallic plate fitting in anannnlar groove upon the interior of the staves adapted to close the other end of the barrel, said plate provided with an oblong opening formed through the same, an annular bead formed upon the .under side of the plate surrounding the opening, a concaved cover slightly larger than the opening through the plate also formed oblong, an annular groove formed in the upper side of the cover adapted to fit the bead, sealing material adapted to be inserted in the annular groove, an interiorly-threaded stud extending upwardfrom the center of the cover, a removable cross-bar resting at each end upon the plate and extending across the opening, a bolt fixed my signature in the presence of two subpassing downward through the cross-bar and scribing Witnesses. threaded into the stud, the cross-bar being i separate and only held in place by the bolt I ALEXANDER JAEGER' 5 threaded into the stud, as and for the purpose Witnesses:
GEORGE E. OLD,
specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto af- EMIL KEMP'INER.
