BUTTER-TUB CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 470,835, dated March 15, 1892. Application filed September 4, 1891. Serial No. 404,688. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER DUESLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Argusville, countyof Schoharie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to such improvements;
' and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar letters refer to similar several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of my improved butter-tub or packing-vessel. Fig. 2'is a side elevation of same, partly in section.
My invention relates particularly to improvements in mechanism for detachably securing the cover upon a vessel adapted for use in packing butter or similar substances.
A is the body of the receptacle, made, preferably of sheet metal, and provided at its up per and lower ends with peripheral flanges or parts in the hoops A A which support the walls of the receptacle. The hoops or flanges may be made of wood or other suitable material.
The cover B is made, preferably, of wood and is provided with a depending flange B, extending around its periphery, which is of sufficient diameter to permit the flange to inclose the hoop or flange A on the upper end of the receptacle when the cover is placed upon the same. The flange B is of such depth that its bottom edge extends almost or quite to the bottom edge of the flange A when the cover is in position on the receptacle. The cover is provided with a plurality of clamp-hooks B each hook consisting of a vertical portion B hinged to the vertical edge of the cover by a strap B an arm B projecting right-angularly from the lower end of the vertical portion on a level with the bottom of the depending flange B, and an arm 13, projecting similarly from the upper end of such vertical portion on a level with the top of the cover and in the same vertical plane with the lower arm. The clamp-hook is free to rotate in the bearing formed between the vertical edge of the cover and the strap B whereby the arms of the same may be swung across the periphery of the cover, the dotted curved lines in Fig. 1 indicating the path traveled by the upper arm.
The operation of the device is as follows: The arms of the clamp-hooks are swung without the periphery of the cover and the latter is placed upon the receptacle, with the depending flange on the cover inclosing the flange A on the covered end of the receptacle. The cover is then securely clamped to the receptacle by swinging the clamp-arms within the periphery of the cover, the upper arm, which may be used as a handle to operate the device, engaging and seating upon the upper surface of the cover and the lower arm engaging and seating upon the under surface of the flange A. I am thus able to easily and quickly secure the cover upon the receptacle and also leave it free to be de-' tached from the same when desired, it being only necessary to swing the clam p-arms without the periphery of the cover, when the latter may be lifted from the receptacle. Iprefor to provide one arm of each clamp with an inclined seat, whereby the clamp can be adjusted to compensate for slight inaccuracies in the construction and fitting together of the cover and receptacle. away a portion of the cover near the edge in the path traveled by the'upper arm of the clamp-hook to-form an inclined seat D, upon which such arm rides to its locked position and rests.
I have shown the cover provided interiorly with a packing-ring 0, made of felt or similar material, to protect the contents of the receptacle when closed from the 'air or other foreign matter.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a packing-vessel, the combination, with I therefore cut a receptacle and a cover for the same, of a clined seat for one arm of the several clamps,
peripheral flange on the receptacle near its covered end, a plurality of clamp-hooks severally hinged to the periphery of the cover and each provided with an upper arm adapted to seat upon the upper surface of the cover and a lower arm adapted to seat upon the under surface of the flange, and an insuhstantially as described. 10 In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of August, 1891.
