provements in Churn-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to churns and has for an object to provide a cover therefor for securely closing the opening of the churn.
The invention embodies, among other features, a cover adapted for locking engagement with the churn body, the cover being so arranged relatively to the body that the cover can be easily and quickly secured in locked position and as easily and quickly removed from the churn body.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification in which similar characters of re ference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a churn showing my cover supported in open position; Fig. :2 is a plan view of the churn showing the cover in closed position; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3*?) in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the grooves in the cover frame; and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the cover, showing the locking members formed thereon.
Referring more particularly to the views. I employ a churn body of any preferred type, the said churn body having a top 11 provided with the usual opening 12. A cover frame 13 is rigidly secured to the top 11 by means of suitable bolts 14, the mentioned cover frame being substantially circular in shape and provided with an integral, circular lip 15 depending in the opening 12, the lower end of the mentioned lip being curved inwardly to form a seat 16 for a packing 17, as shown.
A cover 18 is provided to close the open ing 12, and the mentioned cover comprises a body portion 19, preferably made of wood a locking frame 20 being rigidly secured to the body portion 19 by suitable bolts 21, the mentioned locking frame being 0 cular in shape and having formed therewith a depending circular lip 22 having the lower edge thereof beveled and adapted to engage the packing 17, the mentioned depending lip being arranged to encircle the periphery of the body portion 19 as shown.
A series of inclined grooves -23 are formed onthe cover frame 18 adjacent the upper end of the lip 15 and a series of locking lugs :24 are formed on the locking frame 20 adjacent the upper end of the lip the mentioned locking lugs being inclined and adapted to fit into the grooves 23 in the cover frame when it is desired to secure the cover 18 in locked position on the churn body 10.
An integral apertured supporting flange 25 i; formed on the cover frame 13 and secured to the cover 18 and to the locking frame 20 thereof is a handle 26 having the ends thereof bent upwardly to form gripping members 1 one of the said gripping members being adapted to extend through the aperture in the supporting flange '25 as shown in Fig. 1 when it is desired to support the cover on the churn bodv 10 but above the opening 12. i
in the use of my device, when it is do sired to close the opening 12 of the churn body 10. the cover it is mounted over the opening with the locking lugs 21- arranged to register \vitl the grooves 23 formed in the rover frame 13 and then by grasping the gripping members :27 of the handle 26 and inu'iarting a rotating movement to the cover 18, the locking lugs 24 will be advan ed in the grooves 23. thus moving the cover downwardly to close the opening 12 of the churn body 10 when the cover is rotated mentioned. and the mentioned downward movement of the cover will cause he lower beveled edge of the lip 22 to engage the packing 17 mounted upon the seat 16 of the lip 15, thus securely wedging the cover against the packing. thus entirely closing the opening 12 of the churn body 10. it being understood that the cover need only be subjected to a half turn in order to secure the cover in lowered position on the urn body, in view of the arrangenwnt of the grooves 23 and the locking lugs 24 operable in the grooves of the cover frame 13.
It will be observed that the flange 25 is (posed at an angle to the plane of the body portion of the frame 2. as shown in Fig. 1. Therefore. when one of the gripping members 27 is inserted through the opening in the flange :25 the body portion of the cover will be held at an angle with re lation to the top 11, so that When the cover is in this position any milk or cream which might be upon the same will have a tendenr v to gravitate or run therefrom.
Having thus desrribed in invention, 1 (liillll I In combination with a ehurn top having an, opening, a frame including an integral depending portion projecting into the open in; and an annular portion lying upon and -erured to the ehnrn top, with the said depending portion threaded, a cover having a threaded portion for engagen'iei'it with the threaded depending portion of the frame and adapted to close the opening of the churn top, an apertured flange formed with the frame and projecting at an acute angle with relation to the said top, and a handle projecting from an edge of the cover and adapted to P2158 through the aperture of the flange and abut against the churn top whereby the said cover can be held in an elevated position relatively to the churn top and supported in open position by the said frame.
In teetiniony whereof I allix my signature in presenee of two witnessesv HENRY ll GREENSIDE.
'itnesses CHAS. W. BOPP, J. M. CASTOY.
