G. E. BURNHA-M.
CAN GOVER- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. GEORGE. E. BURNIIAM, OF MINNEAPOLIS, KANSAS. V
CAN-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 572,471, dated December 1, 1896. Application filed Febr ary 11, 1896. Serial No. 578,872. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BURNHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Ottawa and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Covers for Milk and Cream; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cans and covers therefor, designed especially for the reception and transportation of milk or cream; and it has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction whereby cream can be kept from slopping and moving about and churning in the can duringits transportation.
The invention embodies a cover with means whereby it may be secured at any point within the can, according to the height of the milk or cream therein, and having provision for allowance of the escape of 'air.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved can with the cover in elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the cover.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the can, which is of uniform diameter throughout its entire height, so that it can be more readily cleaned and the cover readily moved therein to any desired height.
Bis the cover, having, preferably, a conical top with a screw-threaded neck or nipple b, adapted to receive the screw-cap C, so as to effectually close the same when desired. This cover has a depending-flange l3 fitted to move readily within the can. The cover is provided with suitable handles D, by which it may be manipulated and arranged. The upper edge of its depending flange has an .expansible band E, which may or may not have secured thereto a band B, of rubber or some similar material, so that the cover may be made perfectly tight at any point in the can from the top to the bottom, and this band E is designed to be expanded by means of a screw or thumb bolt G, passed through the internally-threaded ears 9 at the ends of the band. This band is separate from but applied above the flange of the cover.
In practice the cover is placed Within the can and pushed down into the required height close onto the cream, the screw-cap being removed, so as to allow of the escape of the air. When the cover is in the desired position, it is there fastened by turning the screw-bolt, so as to expand the band and cause it to engage frictionally all around with the inner wall of the can, and the cover is held down upon the cream or milk, so as to prevent the same from slopping or splashing and churning. WVhen it is desired to remove the cream, all that it is necessary to do is to move the screw-cap, when the cream can be poured into openings in the top of the cover, or by loosening the band the entire cover may be removed. I 8o Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 8 5 The combination with the can, of a cover having a depending flangefitted within said can and provided with an opening in the top thereof with a closure therefor, an expansible band mounted on the upper edge of the cover and having ears extending at right angles therefrom, a screw-bolt threaded in the said ears and an elastic band around the outer surface of the expansible band, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. BURNHAM. \Vitnesses:
J. O. MURPHY, A. F. DICKINSON.
