To a-Zl'whom it may concern Be it known that I, SoLoN SMITH, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Krebs, in the county of Pittsburg and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Covers for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles and more particularly to what will be known as a miners dinner pail, the main object of the invention being the provision of an improved means whereby the cover of a miners dinner pail can be quickly and readily placed in position and, at the same time, will be securely held against accidental removal.

Another object of the present invention is the provision of an improved cover for miners dinner pails or buckets which will possess advantages in points of etficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.

iVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the upper deck member. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail elevation illustrating the relative position of the slot and pin.

It is a well known fact that miners dinner pails generally consist of a body portion which, in the accompanying drawing is indicated by the numeral 1 and which is particularly adapted for the reception of tea, coffee, soups or any other liquid eatables which the owner of the bucket might desire to carry. This body 1 of the bucket is provided upon opposite sides with the usual ears 2 to which the ends of the pail 3 are secured, said pail supporting the handle 1 at its medial portion whereby the bucket may be readily carried about.

Arranged within the upper end of the ,stance, the body 1 is provided with an annular supporting flange 6, upon which the lower end of the receptacle 5 is adapted to rest to support the same within the body. The side walls of the receptacle 5 are slightly inclined and are provided upon the inner side adjacent the upper edge of the recep tacle with the opposed lugs 7 which project inwardly into the body of the receptacle. The upper open end of the receptacle 5 is closed by means of a removable cover 8 having a suitable handle 9 formed thereon, whereby the cover may be quickly and readily placed in position or removed from the top of the receptacle. The cover 8 is provided with a downwardly and inwardly inclined annular flange 10, the outer surface of which is preferably ground, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The annular flange 10 of the cover 8 is provided at diametrically opposite points with the opposed bayonet slots 11, which include the vertical portions 12 and the horizontal portions 13. Thus, when the cover is arranged in position upon the receptacle 5, the vertical portions of the slots 11 are adapted to receive the lugs 7 and after the cover has been pressed downwardly until the outwardly projecting flange 14: engages the upper edge of the receptacle 5, the cover is turned until the slots 7 are disposed within the horizontal portions 18 of the slots 11 and, in view of the fact that the outer face of the flange 10 is provided with a ground surface, it will tend to engage with the ground surface which is preferably formed upon the inner face of the receptacle 5 at the upper end thereof and prevent any acccidental movement of the cover 8 which would tend to disengage the pins or lugs 7 from the horizontal. portions of the slots 11 and thus release the cover from its closed position.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it

will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable dinner bucket wherein the cover thereof is securely retained in a closed position and held'against accidental removal of the same and it is to be understood. that while I have shown and described my improved adjustable cover as applied to a dinner bucket, it will be apparent that the same may be used equally as well upon milk cans or any other similar containers.

My device, as herein shown and described,

is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.

While I have particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it

will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice, without 1 sacrificin an of the 'rinci les of the invention, or departing from the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described this what I claim is A. receptacle including an outer body hav ing an annular internal flange spaced above its bottom wall, an inner receptacle freely insertible in the outer receptacle, said inner receptacle being of less length than the outer receptacle, whereby its lower end seats upon the flange, a removable closure for the inner receptacle, said closure being provided with a depending" annular flange which seats within the inner receptacle, fastening means whereby the flange of the closure may be dc tachably engaged with the inner receptacle, and a handle for the closure, said handle being adapted to be grasped to thereby remove the inner receptacle from the outer receptacle.
