To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gnonen WAsrnNc'roN Srnns, a native born citizen of the United States, residing at Vancouver, in the county of Clarke and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in devices for attaching detachable handles or bails to containers and vessels which may be made of tin or other sheet metal, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a detachable handle or bail for containers and vessels of tin or other thin sheet metal or substances.

While my invention is adapted to many uses it is particularly adapted for use in connection with tin cans, sheet iron drums,

steel barrels and other packages or containers, which are not provided with convenient handles or any handles at all and which by attaching this device can be made useful as hand-buckets or hoisting-buckets for holding, storing and handling liquids, fluids or dry commodities.

The object of my invention is to produce a device of the above character which is simple in construction, composed of few parts, not liable to get out of order and which may be quickly, easily and cheaply attached to vessels and containers of tin or other thin sheet metal or substances, so that the same can be safely and conveniently handled, then the device removed and used again indefinitely.

With these and other objects in view my invention consists in certain constructions, combinations, arrangements of parts and the method, manner and means of attaching and applying them, the preferred form of which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views at right angles of the complete device; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device attached to a bucket; Figs. a and 5 are detail views showing modifications.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein the same parts are designated by similar reference numbers, and more particularly to Fig. 1, a band or collar 10, preferably made of stiff metal is provided with a handle bail 11. The effective ends Specification-of Letters Patent.

of the bail 11 are turned inward in hook shape at 12, to be inserted in holes 18 of appropriate size made in the opposite sides of the band or collar at corresponding points so as to make movable or pivoted joints. The size and shape of the band or collar 10 may be made to fit the standard makes of vessels and containers commonly used in commerce and in the arts and sciences.

In Fig. 3 there is shown a perspective view of my device attached to an empty five-gallon coal-oil can 14: of rectangular form, ready for use and also one of the methods of attaching the same.

In Fig. 1 the device and container are shown assembled with the non-essential parts broken away, the container 14 being pivotally attached to the band or collar 10 by means of a threaded bolt 15 at the elfective ends of said bail, while in Fig. 5 is shown the same method of attaching in plan view before the device is applied to thereontainer. This second method of attachment is to illustrate the use of the device where the weight of the commodity to be handled, or the use to which the container is to be put, make it preferable to attach the bail to the collar or band by means of bolts, having a thread and nut, inserted through the eyes or loops in the ends of the bail and the registering holes in the collar or band, instead of having the ends of the bail hookshaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.

In assembling the device and the container 14 as illustrated in the perspective view, Fig. 3, we will take for illustration a common five-gallon coal-oil can and proceed as follows: The head or top is first cut out of the can; the band or collar 10 is pressed outwardly and preferably downwardly over.

the can a distance equal to about twice the width of the band below the uppermost edge of the can, then the corners of the can are slit and cut downwardly a distance equal approximately to the width of the band or collar, and the sections 16 of the sides of the can separated by the slits at the corners are bent over the band or collar 10 and pressed or hammered down tight against it. Holes are then punched through the sides of the container or receptacle and through these flaps or flanges so turned over, in line with the respective holes 13 through the collar or band, and the bail 11 is then attached with a movable joint either by in serting the hooked ends 12 of the bail through these holes or by inserting the bolts 15 through the said holes and adjacent loops or eyes 17 of the bail as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. By this method, manner and means a substantial and convenient detachable handle is secured to the receptacle whereby it is rendered convenient and useful for many purposes, and when one receptacle or container is worn out the device can be detached and applied to another.

Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting certain features that,

from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and therefore such adaptations should and areintended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a receptacle having an outwardly bent over flange, a band adapted to fit under said flange, said band and receptacle having registering holes, and

In combination with a receptacle hav- 1 ing an outwardly and downwardly bent flange, a band substantially concealed under said flange, said flange, band and receptacle having registering holes, and a bail having its effective ends pivotally mounted in said registering holes, said effective ends comprising bolts passing through loops in the ends of the bail and thence through said openings, and means adapted to prevent a removal thereof.
