SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,067 dated October 27, 1885 Application filed April 11, 1885.

Be it known that I, JOHN B. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linden, in the county of Cass and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps for Oil-Cans, &0. 5 and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps for oil-cans and the like, the object of the invention being to furnish a cheap and efficient pump for filling a lamp or other receptacle or for emptying a can.
The invention especially relates to means for holding a pump cylinder or barrel within the cask or can,and for preventing oil from escap ing through the aperture or opening through which the cylinder passes; and to these ends it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims. 7
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through an oil-can and my improved pump, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pump detached from the can.
Referring to the drawings, in which like 1etters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, A designates an oil-can of ordinary construction, having an opening or aperture, (1, in its top, near one of the corners of the can, which in the drawings is represented as of rectangular shape.
B designates the barrel or cylinder of the pump, which is passed through the aperture a into the can, and has its lower edges resting on the bottom of the can, as shown. The cylinder is perforated or slitted at its lower edge, as at b, to permit the passage of the liquid into the cylinder, and at its upper end it is provided with an enlarged head, b, to which is connected a nozzle or spout, O, which is preferably curved, as shown, and projects beyond the edge of the can, so as to be adapted to be readily inserted in a lamp and allow the oil Serial No. 161,946. E E designate springs secured at their lower ends to the pump-cylinder by soldering, riveting, or otherwise, and having their upper ends free to act outwardly. The springs are secured to the cylinder at a suitable distance below the point where it passes through the top of the can, and near their upper ends they are bent inwardly, as at e, to provide a notch which is adapted to fit against the lower surface of the top of the can, and thus prevent the pump-cylinder from having lateral motion while the piston is being operated, and holding the cylinder steadily and securely. In the drawings I have shown but two springs; but it is obvious that three or more can be employed without departing from the principle of my invention.
F designates a sleeve fitted over the cylinder B and adapted to slide freely up and down thereon, said sleeve being provided with a flange, f, extending at right angles thereto and adapted to rest on the top of the can over the aperture a therein, thereby preventing the oil or other liquid in the can from splashing out when carrying the can or withdrawing the cylinder therefrom.
It will be observed that the ends of the spring project above the top of the can, and in order to permit them to act freely the flange f is slotted, as at f.
The operation of my invent-ion is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, and it need not therefore be further described.
Modifications in the details of construction and the form and proportion of parts herein shown and described as an embodiment of my invention can be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages thereof-as, for instance, the springmay be provided with a series of notches to adapt the same to be used in cans of different sizes, and the flange of the sleeve may be arranged at an obtuse or acute angle rather than a right angle. I would therefore have it understood that I reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the. scope of my invention.-
