noon Curon Application led January 6,'1930. Serial No. 418,857.
This invention relates .to containers and a1ms to provide an improve or special container f or 'food-stuffs to b 'carried -awayfrom the `place of. purchase.
It will be best understood by descriptio A with reference to the attached drawings il-'. lustrating one practicalembodiment thereof in a familiar 'type of paper carton. In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the container with top applied and a novel funnel therein o n;
pgig. 2 is a vertical section of the container with the funnel inits top closed; andV l Fig., 3 is a plan view of sheet-material piecesv from which the funnel is formed.
The illustrative container embodies a paraliin-treated paper carton 4 of the cylindrical form `commonly used in delicatessen or other stores `for dispensing ice cream and other food-stuis to becarried awayby pur' chasers. Apart from its utility as a container for solid foods, it is specifically adapted to use with liquid preparations such as soups and beverages for which the ordinary paper carton is not suited, so that purchasers thereof are obliged to bring pails or have the samel placed in bottles, unless he wishes to incur the inconvenience of carrying,
hands or clothing.
According to this special design and construction, the to 5 of the carton is formed with a telescoping flange having angular 35 slots 5a engaging with pins 6 atdiametrically opposite points on the carton .body in the manner of a so-called bayonet joint. These pins may comprise ordinary rivet studs applied through or to the wall of the carton.
To theinside of the tops flange, Separate 30 a package liable tospill its contents upon his pieces 7 and 8 of flexible tape are securedat1v diametrically opposed points, in this instance by rivets 9. These pieces of tape are attachedftogether by a sna -fastening 10 so as to provide a light handle or portage purposes.`
In such arrangement, the pieces loop -or engage under the edge of said flange to relievelifting st-rain on the points of securing and providing leverage thereon greatly aidful in removing the top when turned to dlsenpleces or parts cut to pattern are represented Vgrasp by the fingers. The funnel member is Vgage thelocking pins. Moreover, a tighter bind to the carton body thus results.
-In said top, a funnel opening 1 1 is formed to permit emptying (in the case of liquid con' tent) without need for removing the top from the carton.` Into this `opening' is fitted a' 'novel and special funnel member formed of sheet-material such as light paraffin-treated paper or thin cardboard.. Thel component in Fig. 3. The principal part 12 is folded angularly on the dotted lines to form a sluicelike member having 'a bottom portion 12",
'sides 12", side flanges 12- and a lift flap 12d.
To the bottom portion 12a of this .part the over-extending part 13, which 'is bendable along its dotted line is secured by adhesive or otherwise, and to the side flanges 12c theref ofthe part 14 is similarly secured as a brace. The funnel member thus formed is fitted into the aforesaid opening with' the part 13 resting on the outer surface of the top over said opening and with the side flanges 12c of the part 12 as braced by the part 14 adapted to engage under the inside surface of the top along the openings edges. The flap-like portion 13,a of the part 13 is then secured to the top by adhesive or otherwise, while the lift? flap 12d is bentto project upwardly for easy accordingly adapted to outward and inward swing with bending of the part 13 along its dotted line as the axis and enables the carton to be emptied of liquid contents without sloshing over the edge and down its sides as with the ordinary carton. When closed it of course seals the opening.
It may be desirable in some cases to provide anv air hole 15 in the top, in which event a segmental piece 16 of the same material as .the 'funnel may be secured to swing on pivotal fastening over and clear of such hole. The container or carton may be made in various forms and with various modifications of the funnel member without departing from the spirit andscope of the invention so that it will be understood the appended claims are not intended to limit the same to the speciiic construction shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters'Patentof the United States isz-- 1. A food and liquid container comprising .an open-'ended cartonor box having .an over- Y '5 engaging -top lockably fitted lthereto vand a strapl handle having opposite ends extending under and secured tothe inner side of the n .top?'s edges s o as to exert-an outward spring-` ing and removing leverage thereonv with upl 10 ward pull when said top is unlocked or released. l r2, A foodand liquid container comprising an open-ended carton or box having a marv .l ginally lian ld top lockably lfitted thereover fand a. tape' andle `having its opposi te,ends extending 4under and secured to the inner side `of the tops iange at opposedpoints so as to exert a lifting and removing leverage therevon with-upward pull when said top is unlocked or released. Y t
' '3. A food and liquid container comprising an openended carton` or box having pins extended from .its sidesga flanged top fitting over the open Vend of the carton having slots `engaging the pins thereof inv a locking connecton and a hinged spout forming a clo-` sure vfor a drainage opening therein and n -iiexible handle 'of tape havlng Sits oppositev 'ends; secured to the inner'side of the top so I 3asto extend under the edges thereof and vexert 4an outward-spreading and removing jleverage thereon with upward pull when said `top is unlocked "or releasedfrom its connection with Vthe carton. '4. A container comprising an open-'ended cylindrical carton having a flanged top engailrlnlgthereover and fastened-thereto by a 0e g connection; and a strap handle with vopposlte ends secured on the inner side of 40 the tops flange at opposed points so asto extend under the edge thereof and exert-an A outward-spreading and removing leverage thereon with upward pull when said top is `unlocked or released from its connection with thecart01l.r i v. In testimony whereof I aiix my` signature. RUFUS 'CI-IOATE.
