WITNE5SES| THE GRAF UNrTED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
WENDEL BOURGUIGNON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 58,464, dated January 5, 11575; application filed October 24, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern Beit known that I, WENDEL BoUEGUre- NON, of Providence, in the county ot' Providence and State ot' Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottleStoppers, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specitication, in Which- Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved bottle-stopper; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the cap detached from the neck of the bottle; and Fig. 4, an elevation of the bottleneck and fastening, showing the cap removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has relation to that class of Stoppers where a cap or cover is used in connection with suitable fastenings to allow of the cap or cover being secured to or removed from the mouth of the bottle; and my invention consists in a cap provided with arms, working in oppositely-inclined slots or grooves in a band or strap encircling the neck ot' the bottle, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents a cap having an annular iiange or rim, a, which receives a suitable packing ot' cork, indiarubber, or other elastic material, forming an air or liquid tight joint between the cap and mouth of the bottle. This cap `A is provided, upon opposite sides, with arms B B, slightly curved in an outward direction tovcont'orm to the swell in the bottleneck. Aband or strap,(), formed of suitablematerial, encircles the bottle-neck, and is provided with oppositely-inclined grooves c c, in which slide or travel pins b b, secured to the ends of the arms B B. This strap or band O, after being placed around the neck ot the bottle, is securely fastened thereon, the ends of the band forming a thumb-piece, d, with which to operate the fastening.
rlhe cap A is released from the mouth ot' the bottle in the fol-lowing manner: The band or strap O is turned in the required direction by the thumb-piece d, at the same time holding the cap A in a vertical position, the pivots or pins Z) b following the inclined grooves c c until the cap A is raised sufficiently to allow of its being moved aside, as shown in Fig. et of the drawing.
When it is desired to fasten the cap A upon the mouth of the bottle, the cap is placed in an upright position, and held there while the band or strap Gis moved in an opposite direction to that in releasingthe cap until the same is brought down tirmly upon the mouth of the bottle.
This stopper-fastenin g is simple in construction, and capable of being secured to bottlenecks of any form or size.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-V y In combination with the oppositelyinclined grooved band O, the cap A, provided with arms B B and suitable fastening-pins b', constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
VENDEL BOURGUIGNO.
