GUSTAVE KOCH, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-STgOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,813, dated December 21, 1897. Application led September 5, 1896- Serial No. 604,991. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsTAvE KooH, a citizen of Germany, residing in New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle- Stoppers,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure lis an elevation showing my improved bottle-stopper inserted in the neck of a bottle and locked. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2, indicated in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a side elevation at right angles to the View shown in Fig. l, showing my improved bottlestopper set in the mouth of the bottle unlocked. Fig. 4 is a side elevation in similar position of the bottle as in Fig. 3, showing the stopper removed from the neck of the bottle. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, and Figs. 6 and 7 side elevations, of a modified construction of my improved bottle stopper. Fig. 8 is a front elevation, Fig. 9 a top View, and Figs. 10 and llside elevations, of another modified vconstruction of myimproved bottlestopper.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all views of the drawings.
My invention relates to bottles and bottlestoppers and it consists of a stopper comprising a plug of some hard material, having 7 shaped slot forming a shoulder in the body of the plug, an elastic packing slid on the plug, and of a wire bow connecting the stopper to the bottle and holding it also securely inposition when inserted in the neck thereof.
Plug a is concavely tapered, as shown in the drawings, to conform'to the shape of the aperture of the bottle and also to provide a larger contact-surface between the plug and the packing o, which latter is purposely made in the shape of a ring having a circular section in order to make it roll on the plug ot when the same is inserted in the mouth of the bottle. Thereby the friction. between the packing and the plug on the mouth of the bottle is reduced and a perfectly hermetical closing of the aperture of the bottle eected. Y The lower end of the plug is provided with flange CZ to hold the elastic packing b thereon.
In the body of the plug a is provided the 7 -shaped slot e, extending from near the flange d in a straight or slightly-curved line upward and then turning horizontally, as shown in the drawings, thus forming a shoul- 'der or seat f for bow c when locking plug a in the neck of the bottle. y Bow c is preferably made of spring-wire, either in the shape shown in Fig. l and its pointed ends c' and c2 slid in holes g, whereby the stopper is attached to the neck of-the bottle, or it may be composed of two parts with ends wound in loops and attached to the bottle by means of a band, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 7. The center part of bowc (bar l) slides in slot e of the plug a, and when the bottle is open the plug a hangs in position as shown in Fig. 4, bow c being then in the lowest point of the slot e. In this position the plug a may be moved to and from the mouth of the bottle.
When the bottle is to be closed, the plug a is set in its mouth, as shown in Fig. 3, and then pressed downward as far as it will go, and when pressed in sufficiently deep so as to hermetically close the aperture of the bottle bow c is slid into seat f, and thereby the stopper is locked in the mouth of the bottle. To open the bottle again, the stopperis pressed slightly farther downward, bow c moved from its seat in the slot e, and then the stopper will be lifted by the rebounding` action of the elastic packing b tothe position shown in Fig. 3, when with a slight tap sidewise it may be removed from the mouth of the bottle.
In Figs. I5, 6, and 7 I have shown a modifled construction of myimproved bottle-stopper, the difference being in the construction of the bow c and in the manner of its fastening to the neck of the bottle. In this construction the bow c is composed of two partsnamely, of the bar Z,joining parts cand c' of the bowand is extended into bow lo. Around the neck of the bottle is fastened the band h, provided with pins fi, and the bow is attached thereto by means of the loops m. Bow k, resting on the neck of the bottle, acts as a spring, and being bent at a suitable angle tov the part c of the bow, as shown in Fig. '7, forces bar Z into the seat f when the plug a is pressed in the neck of the bottle, thus locking the stopper automatically in its position in the mouth of the bottle.
For bottles having heads shaped as shown in Fig. 11 I have devised another modiiied IOO construction of my improved stopper, this modified construction being illustrated in Figs. S, 9, l0, and 1l. In this construction the bow c is similarly shaped as that shown in Fig. 1, only its ends are bent to form shoulders u. These shoulders press against the flange 0 of the head of the bottle, and being bent at a suitable angle to the parts c of the bow they cause the bow to be pressed in the seat f of the slot e in asimilar manner as the spring-bow k in the modiiied construction described above.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent- 1. A stopper for hermetically closing the neck of a bottle or of a similarly-shaped Vessel, the stopper comprising a plug, having a concavely-tapered body with a fiange on its lower end and a head on its upper end, a 7- shaped slot, forming a slideway and a shoulder in the body of the plug; an elastic packing, slid on the plug and adapted to roll thereon, and a bow passed through the slot of the plug pivotally attached to the neck of a bottle, the bow being composed of two integral parts coacting as aspring, in forcing the bridge of the bow upon the shoulder of the plug when the stopper is pressed into the mouth of the bottle.
2. In a bottle-stopper the combination with a 7 -slotted plug, the slot forminga slideway and a shoulder in the body of the plug, and with an elastic packing, slid on the plug, of a bow, pivotally attached to the neck of a bottle and composed of two integral parts, one of which is passed through the slot of the plug and the other adapted to engage with the body of the bottle and to act as a spring, forces the bridge of the bow upon the shoulder of the plug when the stopper is pressed into the mouth of the bottle.
3. In a bottle-stopper the combination with a bow, pivotally attached to the neck of a bottle and with a plug, provided with a 7 -shaped slot, forming a slideway and a shoulder in the body of the plug, of a spring, formed integral with the bow and forcing it in its seat upon the shoulder, formed by the 7 -slot in the body of the plug when the plug is pressed in its position closing the neck of a bottle.
In witness that I claim the improvements described in the foregoing specification I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAVE KOCH.
