HEMAN P. BROOKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES L. CARSON, OF TORRINGTON, CONNECTICUT.
BOTTL E-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,55 dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed March 2, 1885. (No model.)
i To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEMAN P. BROOKS, of Brooklyn in the county of Kings and State of New Yorkfhave invented an Improvement in Bottle-Stopper Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
Bottle-stoppers have been made in which an elastic stopper is connected to a metallic button, and the latter is provided with a bail and a pivoted lever, by means of which the stopper is pressed upon the mouth of the bottle.
In my improvement the stopper-bail is provided with longitudinal slots through which pass the ends of the neck-band wire, and these ends of the neck-band wire also form pivots upon which the stopper-bail can be swung to press the stopper upon the neck of the bottle, or away from the same, and a wire lever with double cams is pivoted to the said neck-band wire and acts against the lower ends or feet of the bail to force the same down and press the stopper upon the neck of the bottle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper end of a bottle with the stopper pressed close upon the same. Fig. 2 is asimilar view with the stopper opened, and Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1.
The bottle A is provided with the ordinary mouth at the upper end of the neck, and around the same is a neck-band, I), having projecting pivot-s c at the end, and D is a wire loop for securing the neck-band to the bottle, as usual. The stopper is composed of india rubber E upon a button or base, F, and G is 3 5 a bail extending across and attached to the stopper and provided with vertical slots extending along the lower portions of the bail, and at K are feet extending out laterally from the lower ends of the bail G.
There is a lever, L, having two arms, Z, with eyes at their ends through which the neckband pivots 0 project, and the portions N of the lever L are cam-shaped,so that as the said lever L is swung down upon the pivots c the cam portions N will act upon the feet at the lower ends of the bail G and press the stopper firmly into its place.
When the lever L is thrown up into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1,the parts are liberated and the bottle stopper can be opened. When it is thrown back the other way the stopper is closed and forced firmly to the neck of the bottle.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the rubber stopper 5 5 E andbutton F, of the bail G,slotted longitudinally near the lower ends thereof, the neckband 12, having projecting ends passing through slots in the bail G, a lever with two arms pivoted at their ends to the ends of the neck-band wire, and the feet K projecting at the lower ends of the bail, against which the cam portions N of the lever L act, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 17th day of February,A.
. HEMAN P. BROOKS. Witnesses:
