To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HEMAN I). BROOKS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, havcinvented an Improvement in BottleStoppers, of which the following is a specification.

In bottle-Stoppers it is common to employ an elastic button or plug beneath a cap-plate, and upon this cap-plate an arch or bow has been provided, throughwhich the swinging bail passes.

My present invention relates to this general class of Stoppers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the parts hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the stopper. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section.

The neckband A receives the pivots b at the lower ends of the swinging bail B, and this bail passes through the space below the arch C on the capplate D, and E is the elastic button or stopper. Upon the cap-plate and within the arch G is the cam F, the upper edge of which is slightly recessed at 2, and the bail is sprung into this recess when the stopper is closed kupon the neck of the bottle.

YThe lever G is made use of for prying the bail into and out of the recess 2. This leveris made of wire, bent double at 3, and having right-angle ends 4, with eyes 5, through which the bail passes.

There are projections 6 upon the cap-plate D,against which the right-angle ends 4 act as the leveris forced down into the position shown in Fig. I, and the bail is thereby pried along over the cam F into the recess 2, and in so doing the stopper is forcibly pressed upon the mouth of the bottle. There is a cross-piece, 7,

upon the lever G, which springs into the recess 8 in the outer edge of the arch C, and

thereby prevents the lever G swinging loosely as the strainin closing the bottle is taken upon the cam F at the recess 2.

When the bottle is to be opened,the double 45 end 3 of the lever G is pressed upwardly to free the cross-piece 7 from the notch 8, so that the lever is loose,and it is swung over into the position shown in Fig-3, and the cross-piece 7 rests upon the cainprojection 9 of the arch C, 5o and the further movement of the lever G by the thumb causes the cross-piece 7 to slide along over the cam 9, and in so doing the bail B is lifted from the recess 2 and drawn back over the cam F, so as to liberateV the stopper 55 and allow the bail and stopper to swing freely as the stopper is removed from the neck of' the bottle.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the swinging bail 6c and elastic stopper, of a capplatc having an arch, O, with the cam projection 9`upon it, and the cam F, having a recess, 2, and the wire lever G,bent doubleiat 3, and having the right-angle ends l and eyes 5, through which 65 the bail passes, and the eross-piece 7, substaniially as set forth.

2. rlhe combination, in a bottle-stopper, of the elastic stopper, the-cap-pieee having the arch C and cam F, with the recess 2,the swing- 7o ing bail pivoted to the neck-band and passing through the arch C, thelever G, of wire, loent double at 3, and having the right-angle ends 4 and eyes 5, and the crosspiece 7 upon the lever G springing into the notch 8 upon the arch C 75 when the stopper is closed, substantially as set forth.
