Description

UNITED STATES PA'I'ENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM VOM HOFE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. I
lMPROVEMENT IN- FRUIT-JAR STOPPERS.
Specificatioh forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,327, dated February 29, 1876, application filed. J annary 27, 1876.
Toall whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM VoM HOFE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stopper for Fruit-Jars, which invention is fully set forth in thefollowing specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my fruit-jar whenthe same is, closed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of, thesame when itis open.
Similarlettersf indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a stopper -forfruitjars, which is composed of the following elements: A bailor yoke swings in recesses formed in the sides of the jar; a cam-guide formed in the neck of the jar; a lever, which is provided with two holes, one to receive .the yoke and the other to receive a pivot, which forms the connection between said lever and the cover of the jar a gasket-supporting shoulder below the top edge of the jar and the cover, so that when the lever is turned to its opening position, the cover can readily be swung off from the mouth of the jar, and when the cover is brought over the mouth of the jar and the lever is turned to its locking position, the cover is firmly depressed upon the gasket-supporting shoulder, and the jaris firmly closed. The recesses for retaining the yoke are formed in the edge of a cam-guide formed in the neck of the jar, so that said yoke can be readily introduced or removed.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a fruit-jar which is provided with a gasketsupporting shoulder, at, below its top edge. In the example shown in the drawing this shoulder is formed on the outside of the mouth of the jar, soas to prevent the contents of the jar from coming in contact with the gasket b, but said gasket-supporting shoulder mightbe formed on the inside of the month. In the neck of the jar A are formed recesses c, for the reception of the ends of a yoke, B,
- which carries the devices for closing the mouth of the jar. Said recesses may be made in the form of simple cavities, and in this case the ends of the yoke will have to be sprung in the same; but in the example shown in the drawing the recesses c are ascendstoward the recesses, so that when the ends of the yoke are made to catch from op.- posite sides, underthe lowest portion of the cam-guide, they will readily enter the recesses without springing the yoke apart. On the yoke B swings a lever, O, which is provided with two holes, ef, one for the reception of the yoke and the other fonthe reception of a pivot, g, which passes through a forked standard, h, rising from v the cover D. This cover is made with a downwardly-projecting rim, which, when the the cover is closed, bears upon the gasket b so as to produce a tight joint. When the ends of the yoke B are brought into the recesses c, the cover, together with the fastening mechanism, can be swung off from the month of the jar to the position shown in Fig. 3, or said cover can be brought over the mouth of the jar, and by depressing the lever O to the postion shown in Fig. 1, the
cover-is firmly closed, the joint being rendered tight by the gasket b. It will be noticed that when the lever O is depressed the yoke is caused to swing over and a little beyond the pivot g, which forms the connection between said lever and the cover D, and by the strain of the yoke itself the lever is firmly retained in its closing position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a fruit-jar, of the cam guide d on the neck of the jar, and having recesses c, a yoke which swings in said recesses, a lever which is provided with two holes, one to receive .the yoke and the other to receive a pivot, which forms the connection between said lever and the cover of the jar, a gasket-supporting shoulder below the top edge of the jar, and a cover having a rim to bear on the gasket, all constructed and operating substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my. hand and seal this 25th day of January, 1876.
WILLIAM VOM HOFE. [L. s.]
