BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,927, dated April 9, 1889.
Application filed January 28, 1889. Serial No. 297 ,8'78. (No model.)

Be it known that I, SOLOMON MARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention, as here shown, consists of a stopper for bottles intended to be attached to any bottle desired, the object being to provide means of closing a bottle'securely and permitting of its being readily opened for the discharge of its contents and closed again as often as desired.
Figure 1 shows the neck of a bottle with the device attached as seen when closed. Fig. 2 shows the same as seen when open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is the same as Fig. 1 with the addition of flange K.
The device consists- First, of a single piece of metal bent and formed into a plate, A,bent to conform to the curve of the bottle-neck and clasp it to sufficient extent to hold it in place, two jaws, B, perforated at C, a loop, D, passing over and into the bottle-neck, helping to secure the device to the bottle, and a part, E, bent outward and upward, so as to form a spring, F.
Second. A short hollow metal cylinder, G, closed at the upper end, so as to form a cap, and rigidly attached to the part H, which is bent so as to form a proper bearing for the spring F and to afford a lever to be used in raising the stopper. H has lugs on each side fitting into the perforations inthe jaws B, as seen at O, in such a manner as to form a hinge-joint.
Third. A cushion, I, Fig. 3, of soft rubber, 4o
cork, or other suitable material, fitting into and held by the cap G, and having a surface fitting overand closing the mouth of the bottle when the part G is brought down upon it.
Fourth. An elastic rubber or spiral metallic ring, J, which passes entirely around the neck of the bottle and through the loop formed by the parts A and F, to assist in securing the device to the bottle.
Operation: The device is placed upon a bot- 5o end of the part H, which acts as a lever and turns upon the hinge formed by the perforations and lugs seen at O, and held in that position by the spring F.

The combination of the plate A, carrying jaws B and spring F, cap G, having cushion I, lever H, secured to the cap and pivoted to the jaws, and ring J, as and for the purpose set forth. 7 p
