BOTTLE-CLOSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct; 3, 1905.
Application filed December 29, 1904. Serial No. 238,721.
T0 (0% mil/mt it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW C. WITZEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closing Devices, of which the following is aspeciflcation, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to milk-bottles and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved closure device for vessels of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and which may be swung into position and locked therein, so as to close the vessel, by depressing a yoke-shaped lever or thrown out of position, so as to open the vessel, by raising said lever; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck of a milk-bottle provided with my improved closure device, the closure device being shown in section and the bottle being closed thereby; Fig. 2, a view at right angles to Fig. I and showing the neck of the bottle in full lines and the closure device partially in section and showing the bottle open; Fig. 3, a plan view of the closure device; Fig. 4, a plan view of the top part of the closure device, and Fig. 5 a side View of the top part of the closure device.
In the drawings forming part of this speciiication I have shown my invention applied to a milk-bottle, the neck of the bottle being shown at a in Figs. 1 and 2, and in the practice of my invention I provide a closure de-- vice proper (designated by the reference char acter b) comprising a central circular body portion 6 having a central annular rim b and the central circular body portion 6 is beveled inwardly both above and below the annular rim 6 as shown at 6*.
The closure device 6 consists of a top part c and a bottom part (2, and the top part c is provided with an annular flange c and the bottom part (Z is provided with an annular flange (Z which is folded around the annular flange c of the top part 0 so as to form the closure device and the rim 6 thereof. The
top part c of the closure device is shown in plan and side view in Figs. 4 and 5 and is provided in the opposite sides of the flange 0 thereof with radial notches or recesses 0 which extend through thebeveled portion 5*, as clearly shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5, and informing these notches or recesses in the flange c a portion of said flange is turned downwardly to form a lip 0 The neck of the bottle is provided, at the top thereof, with an annular bead (6 below which is placed a ring or band 6, in the opposite sides of which are pivoted, as shown at e in Figs. 1 and 2, the opposite sides f of a yoke-shaped member f, and the sides of said yoke-shaped member f are bent, as shown at and the end f of said yoke-shaped member forms a handle by which said member is operated, and the ends of the side portions f thereof are at an angle thereto of about eighty-five or ninety degrees. A supplemental yoke-shaped member 9 is also provided, the sides of which are pivoted in the sides of the yoke-shaped member f at f and the cross-head portion g of the yoke-shaped portion g passes through the notches or recesses c in the beveled part b of the top part c of the closure device proper, and between the said notches or recesses and within the closure device proper the cross-head portion g of the yoke-shaped member g is bent to form a central part g which is not in line with the end parts of the cross-head portion of the yoke-shaped member g, and in this way the closure device proper is connected with the yoke-shaped member 9 in such manner that it is free to swing thereon within certain limits and cannot turn completely thereon.
It will be understood that the cross-head portion 9 of the yoke-shaped member g is passed into the notches or recesses c of the top part c of the closure device proper before the parts 0 and 0i of said closure device proper are connected, and in this operation the lips c of the flange c of the part c of the closure device proper are bent up, so as to hold the yoke-shaped memberg in that part of the recesses c which is formed in the beveled portion 6* of the top part c of the closure device proper.
The parts 6, f, and g are all of the usual construction and form no part of my invention, my said invention consisting in the construction of the closure device proper and in the method of connecting the yoke-shaped member g] therewith.
In closing the bottle all that is necessary is to turn the yoke-shaped memberf downwardly and to the left from the position shown in Fig. 2, and this operation swings the closure device Z) onto the top of the neck of the bottle and into the position shown in Fig. 1, and in the operation of opening the bottle the yokeshaped member f is raised into the position shown in Fig. 2, both of these operations being similar to those employed in closing and opening other bottles or vessels of this class provided with other forms of closure device, and although I have shown and described my invention as applicable to milk bottles it will be understood that the same may be applied to jugs, jars, and vessels of other forms.
By means of the form of the closure device proper a bottle or other vessel of this class may be securely closed without the aid of a packing, the beveled part 1) below the rim (Z, which fits within the top part of the neck of the vessel, serving to facilitate this operation, while the rim d rests snugly on the top of said neck; but, if desired, a packing-gasket or similar device may be employed under the rim (Z in the manner of other devices of this class, and while I prefer to provide the botom part of the closure device with the inwardly-directed beveled portion 7/ below the rim (Z this part of the device may be modifled, if desired.
By forming the closure device proper as shown and described it will be seen that said device is provided with a central circular part the top of which is raised above the rim (Z and the cross-head party of the yoke-shaped member g is passed through the opposite side portions of the said raised part, and said closure device proper is free to rotate within certain limits on said yoke-shaped member, and the separate parts of the closure device proper are composed of sheet metal or similar material which may be easily stamped into the desired form.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
