Description

(No Model.)
B. HGLLENDER. Bottle-Stopper 1%. 228,355. Patented June 1, 1-880.
WWW wave.
MPEI'ERS, PHOTO-LITMOGRAPHER. G O D.
NIIED STATES PATENT Erica.
EMIL HOLLENDER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,355, dated June 1, 1880.
Application filed April 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMIL HOLLENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination, in a bottle-stopper, of a neck-band provided with an eye on one and with a bar on its opposite side, and a bail provided on one side with a rod which engages with and is constructed to swivel in the eye of the neck-band, while on the opposite side of the bail is formed a hook-lock, which, when the bail is swung over the stopper, serves to lock the same and to depress it firmly upon the stopper.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my bottle-stopper when the bottle is closed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view when the bottle is open. Fig. 4is a horizontal section of the same in the plane a; m, Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a bottle, which is closed by an ordinary stopper, B, of cork or any other suitable material.
The means which I employ to retain the stopper securely in position consists of a bail, O, and neck-band D.
The neck-band is provided on one side with an eye, a, and on its opposite side with a bar, I), and it is secured on the neck of the bottle in any suitable manner.
The bail G is, by'preierencc, constructed of a single piece of wire, and it is provided on (N0 model.)
rod to form an eye or ring, which may be situated below the eye a, or which may be made to engage with the same; but said head may be produced in any suitable manner. The rod 0 easily slides and turns in the eye a.
The hook-lock d is produced by bending the wire which forms the bail in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the partf of the hook being slightly inclined, so that when the bail is swung over the stopper the incline f readily catches heneath the bar I) of the neck-band, and by pressin g said incline inward to the position shown in Fig. 1 the bail is firmly depressed upon the stopper and locked in its closing position.
When the bottle is to be opened the hooklock (1 is forced back, so as to become disengaged from the bar b; and in order to permit this operation the rod 0 must swivel in the eye a, and as soon as the bail has been swung around to the position shown in Fig. 3 the stopper can be readily withdrawn, or, if the bottle is filled with an effervescent liquid under sufficient pressure, the stopper is forced out automatically as soon as it is no longer retained by the bail.
By this arrangement the bail is always in position to be swung over the stopper and to lock the same when the bottle is closed, and when the bottle is empty the bail is not in the way of cleaning the bottle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a bottle-stopper, of a neck-band provided with an eye on one side and with a bar on its opposite side, and a bail provided on one side with a rod which engages with and is constructed to swivel in the eye of the neck-band, while on the opposite side of said bail is formed a hook-lock, constructed to engage with the bar of the neckband, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL HOLLENDER.
