STOPPER FOR-BOTTLES OFF-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,620, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed March 28, 1903. Serial No. 150,064. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DOMINICK L. BOLLER- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing atWest l-Ioboken,in the county of Union, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Stopper for Bottles or Jars, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in a stopper to beused in bottles, jars, or decanters, of glass or other material, whereby they cannot be refilled without being detected.
The obj ect of myimprovement is to provide acorking or closing of a bottle, jar, or decanter, so that it cannot be used again and filled with an imitation of the product of the original bottling or manufacture without being easily discoverable. I attain these objects by a bolt made either of glass, metal or china, underneath which, in a groove, is situated a spring and which is held down to the top of the bottle, jar, or decanter over a cork or stop-' per to be inserted in the neck, the two'ends of the bolt being held down bytwoloops of,
glass on either side of the end and top of the bottle.
Figure 1 shows a portion of the bottle having loops formed thereon, the bottle being shown before it is filled. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the stopper locked in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the neck of the bottle with its stopper and with a spring forming part of my locking device. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details of the bolt for locking the stopper in position.
My invention consists of the two loops 1 and 2, the spring 3, and the bolt 4, used in cornbination. V
To close the bottle, the cork or stopper 6 should be inserted flush with the top of the bottle. Then opposite one loop a steel spring 3 is inserted between the cork 6 and the inside of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 3. This spring is bent where it protrudes above the cork and carried along and across the top of the cork or stopper to the other loop. The pointed end of the bolt 4% is then passed from the outside first through the loop on the side where the spring has been inserted between the cork and the neck of the bottle and this end passed through the opposite bolt and over the steel spring 3, lying on the top of the cork; As the small end of the bolt is passed through the inside loop the spring rises into the groove 4 in the inside of the bolt-4: and becomes fastened, as shown in the illustration, so that the bolt cannot be drawn back.. This prevents the opening of the bottle except by breaking off the loops.
To open the bottle, jar, or decanter, the
loops, which may be made of glass, china, or other brittle substance, are to be snapped off.
' If any one desires to use the bottle .over again,
the loops would have to be put on, and so it could be easily discovered that the bottle had been used before. 7
lVha-t I claim as my invention is' 1. In a bottle and in combination with the stopper thereof, said bottle having bolt-receivin g means at its mouth above said stopper, a bolt passing through said receiving means over the stopper, and a concealed element coacting with said stopper and said bolt for holding the bolt in position, whereby the bolt receiving means have to be broken before the bolt and stopper can berem oved,substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described,
a bottle having loops at its mouth, a bolt pass- I ing through said loops, and a spring coacting with said bolt and locking the same in position, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character. described, a bottle having loops at its mouth, a bolt passing through said loops and having a slot or recess at its under side and a spring arranged to be seated in said recess and lock the bolt in position, substantially as described.
