Be it known that I, BERT L. VVooD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottleSeals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a novel construction in a device for sealing bottles, the object being to provide a simple and efficient device to enable the consumer to determine absolutely the genuineness of wines, liquors, medicines, &c purchased by him; and itconsists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the neck portion of a bottle and seal therefor constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the neck portion of the bottle, the seal being removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bottle. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line L 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to said drawings, A indicates the neck of a bottle, which is preferably made thicker than usual and is provided at diametrically opposite points with longitudinal grooves B, extending from the upper end of said neck to a point about midwaybetween the ends of same. In the said upper end of said neck, in alinement with'said groove B, I

provide recesses C.

In the bottom of each groove B, midway between the ends thereof, I provide recesses D, each of which is adapted to receive inverted-.V-shaped flat springs E, one arm of which is adapted to project into the groove B. The said neck is sealed. by means of a cork F in the usual manner, my device being intended only to prevent removal of said cork and substitution of contents of the bottle,

flask, jug,,or other package to which it may be applied, and to this end I provide a cap G, of glass or similar brittle material, which is adapted to fit within the enlarged upper end H of said neck above the cork, but below the eX- treme upper end of said neck, said cap being provided with radial arms J, fitting said recess C and carrying downwardly-extending arms K at their outer ends, which are adapted to enter said grooves B. The said arms K are beveled on their inner faces at their lower ends, as at L, and above said beveled portion are provided with recesses M, adapted to receive the free ends of the projecting arms of said springs E, which serve to prevent withdrawal of said arms K from said grooves B without severing them from the cap Gr, so that after placing said cap in position it will be impossible to remove the same without breaking it. To prevent said springs from being jarred out of said recesses M, a plastic cement may be introduced into the recesses C and M at the time said cap is placed in position, said cement when set serving to hold said spring firmly in position.

My .device is very simple, efficient, and cheap and serves as an absolute preventive against the substitution of spurious goods.

I claim as my invention% 1. The combination with the neck of a bottle having longitudinal grooves and recesses within said grooves, and springs in said recesses projecting into said grooves, of a cap having arms adapted to enter said grooves, said arms having recesses adapted to receive said. springs.

2. Thecombination with the neck of a bottle provided with longitudinal grooves on its outer face, there being recesses in the bottom of said grooves, and inverted-V-shaped springs mounted in said recesses and projecting into said grooves, of a cap adapted to cover said neck,- arms on said cap adapted to enter said grooves and having recesses adapted to receive the projecting portions of said springs.

3. The combination with the neck of a bottle or the like having recesses inits upper end and longitudinal grooves in its outer face in alinement with said recesses, there being pockets in the bottom of said grooves, and inverted.- V -shaped springs mounted in said pockets and projecting at one end therefrom, of a cap having radial projections adapted to enter said recesses, and arms at the ends of said projections adapted to enter said grooves, said arms having recesses adapted to receive the projecting ends of said springs to hold said cap against removal.

4. The combination with the neck of a bottle annularly thickened at its upper end and having radial recesses in said upper end and iongitudinal grooves in'its outer face in alinement With said recesses, there being pockets in said grooves, and inverted-V-shaped springs mounted in said pockets and projecting at one end therefrom, of a cap adapted to enter said upper end of said neck, L-shaped thickened arms on said cap entering said recesses and grooves and having recesses in their free end portions adapted to receive the projecting portions of said springs. 5
